OET (OET-LV)And_see/lo/see I_will_send DOM the_boy go find DOM the_arrows if explicitly_(say) I_will_say to_the_boy there the_arrows of_you and_on_this_side bring_them and_come if/because safety to/for_yourself(m) and_there_is_no anything by_the_life of_YHWH.

OET (OET-RV)Then I’ll send my boy to find the arrows. If I tell him that they’re on my side, then just as Yahweh lives it’ll be safe for you to come out.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

אֶשְׁלַ֣ח אֶת־הַנַּ֔עַר לֵ֖ךְ מְצָ֣א אֶת־הַחִצִּ֑ים

send DOM the,boy go find DOM the, arrows

Jonathan is describing what he will say to the boy. You may wish to make this explicit in your translation, using a natural way of introducing direct quotations in your language. Alternate translation: [I will send a boy, saying, ‘Go find the arrows.’]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

אֶשְׁלַ֣ח אֶת־הַנַּ֔עַר לֵ֖ךְ מְצָ֣א אֶת־הַחִצִּ֑ים

send DOM the,boy go find DOM the, arrows

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [I will send a boy to go and find the arrows]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

אִם־אָמֹר֩ אֹמַ֨ר

if to_say say

Jonathan is repeating forms of the verb “say” in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing emphasis. Alternate translation: [If I clearly say]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

הִנֵּ֥ה הַחִצִּ֣ים ׀ מִמְּךָ֣ וָהֵ֗נָּה קָחֶ֧נּוּ

see/lo/see! the,arrows of,you and,on_this_side bring,them

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [that he should look and see that the arrows are from him, and hither, so he should get them]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

הַחִצִּ֣ים ׀ מִמְּךָ֣ וָהֵ֗נָּה קָחֶ֧נּוּ

the,arrows of,you and,on_this_side bring,them

Jonathan is using a common expression of his culture to mean that the arrows are on the his side of where the boy is standing. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [you have gone past the arrows, come back toward here and get them]

Note 6 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וָבֹ֛אָה כִּֽי־שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֛ וְאֵ֥ין דָּבָ֖ר

and,come, that/for/because/then/when safe to/for=yourself(m) and,there_is_no problem

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [then, since peace is for you and there is no matter, come]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֛ וְאֵ֥ין דָּבָ֖ר

safe to/for=yourself(m) and,there_is_no problem

It may be more natural in your language to put the information about there being no matter (that is, no reason for David to be concerned) before the information about David having peace, since that is a consequence. Alternate translation: [there is no matter and peace is for you]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֛

safe to/for=yourself(m)

See how you translated this expression in [20:7](../20/07.md). Alternate translation: [you are safe]

Note 9 topic: writing-oathformula

חַי־יְהוָֽה

he/it_lived YHWH

Following the custom of his culture, Jonathan is swearing an oath by guaranteeing it by something he holds sacred. Use a natural way in your language to express an oath. Alternate translation: [I swear this by Yahweh]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

20:18-22 Jonathan’s ruse would allow David to get the message even if there could be no face-to-face meeting; the boy’s presence would allay suspicion and provide Jonathan an alibi for going to the field. As it happened, no one but the boy accompanied Jonathan to the field, so when the boy left, David was able to speak with Jonathan face to face (20:40-42).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
