OET (OET-LV)and_it_glowed/burned the_anger of_Shāʼūl in/on/at/with_Yōnātān and_he/it_said to_him/it Oh_son_of (the)_perverse_woman_of the_rebellious am_not do_I_know if/because_that are_choosing you with_son_of Yishay to_shame_of_your_own and_to_shame_of the_nakedness_of mother’s_of_your.

OET (OET-RV)Sha’ul was furious at Yonatan and yelled at him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do you think that I don’t know that you’re taking the side of Yishay’s son? It’s to your detriment and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֤ף שָׁאוּל֙ בִּיה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן

and=it_glowed/burned also/though Shāʼūl's in/on/at/with,Jonathan

See how you translated this expression in [11:6](../11/06.md). Alternate translation: [And Saul became very angry with Jonathan]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בֶּֽן־נַעֲוַ֖ת הַמַּרְדּ֑וּת

son_of perverse_of the,rebellious

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of rebellion, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [Son of one rebelliously perverting herself]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

am=not I_know that/for/because/then/when chosen you(ms) with,son_of Yishay/(Jesse) to,shame_of,your_own and,to,shame_of nakedness_of mother's_of,your

Saul is using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [Certainly I know that you are choosing the son of Jesse to your shame and to the shame of the nakedness of your mother!]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לְבָ֨שְׁתְּךָ֔ וּלְבֹ֖שֶׁת עֶרְוַ֥ת אִמֶּֽךָ

to,shame_of,your_own and,to,shame_of nakedness_of mother's_of,your

Saul is using these expressions by association to mean that Jonathan’s actions show that he is illegitimate and that his mother’s sexual conduct has been shameful. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [showing that you are shamefully illegitimate and that your mother’s sexual conduct has been shameful]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

20:30 You stupid son of a whore! This epithet was as strong and insulting in Hebrew as it is in English.
• shaming yourself: Saul was interested in the legacy of his own dynasty. He viewed David’s actions as ultimately directed against Jonathan, the hereditary successor. To Saul, Jonathan was stupidly hurting and shaming himself by supporting David.
