OET (OET-LV) If actually_(miss) he_misses_me I_will_show_you(ms) and_say urgently_(ask) he_asked_for_himself from_me Dāvid to_run Bēyt- lehem city_of_his if/because the_sacrifice_of the_days is_there to/from_all/each/any/every the_clan.
OET (OET-RV) If your father misses me, then tell him, ‘David begged me to let him go to his home in Bethlehem, to join his clan for their yearly sacrifice.’
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
פָּקֹ֥ד יִפְקְדֵ֖נִי אָבִ֑יךָ
to_miss he_misses,me I_will_show=you(ms)
David is repeating forms of the verb “miss” in order to intensify his expression of the idea it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [your father indeed misses me]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ נִשְׁאֹל֩ נִשְׁאַ֨ל מִמֶּ֤נִּי דָוִד֙ לָרוּץ֙ בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם עִיר֔וֹ כִּ֣י זֶ֧בַח הַיָּמִ֛ים שָׁ֖ם לְכָל־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָֽה
and,say to_ask he_asked from,me Dāvid to,run house_of food/grain/bread city_of,his that/for/because/then/when sacrifice_of the=days there to/from=all/each/any/every the,clan
David is using a quotation within his speech. If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [then you shall tell him that asking, I asked from you to run to Bethlehem, my city, for the sacrifice of days is there for all of my clan]
Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
נִשְׁאֹל֩ נִשְׁאַ֨ל מִמֶּ֤נִּי דָוִד֙ לָרוּץ֙ בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם עִיר֔וֹ כִּ֣י זֶ֧בַח הַיָּמִ֛ים שָׁ֖ם לְכָל־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָֽה
to_ask he_asked from,me Dāvid to,run house_of food/grain/bread city_of,his that/for/because/then/when sacrifice_of the=days there to/from=all/each/any/every the,clan
If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Since the sacrifice of days is there for all of the clan, asking, David asked from me to run to Bethlehem, his city]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
נִשְׁאֹל֩ נִשְׁאַ֨ל מִמֶּ֤נִּי דָוִד֙
to_ask he_asked from,me Dāvid
David is suggesting that Jonathan repeat forms of the verb “ask” in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for emphasis, it may be appropriate to do so here. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [David sincerely asked me]
Note 5 topic: translate-plural
זֶ֧בַח הַיָּמִ֛ים
sacrifice_of the=days
See how you translated the same expression in [1:21](../01/21.md). Alternate translation: [the annual sacrifice]
20:6-7 Israelite families might designate one of the new moon festivals as an opportunity for an annual family sacrifice (see, e.g., 1:3).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
