OET (OET-RV) Now promise me by Yahweh that you won’t destroy my name from my family line by killing my descendants.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations
הִשָּׁ֤בְעָה לִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה אִם־תַּכְרִ֥ית אֶת־זַרְעִ֖י אַֽחֲרָ֑י וְאִם־תַּשְׁמִ֥יד אֶת־שְׁמִ֖י מִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי
(Some words not found in UHB: and=now see/lo/see! I_know that/for/because/then/when to_be_king you_will_be_king and,established in/on/at/with,hand_of,your kingdom_of Yisrael )
Saul is stating the content of an oath that he wants David to swear. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could present this content as a direct quotation. Alternate translation: [swear to me by Yahweh, “If I cut off your seed after you and if I destroy your name from the house of your father!”]
Note 2 topic: writing-oathformula
אִם־תַּכְרִ֥ית אֶת־זַרְעִ֖י אַֽחֲרָ֑י וְאִם־תַּשְׁמִ֥יד אֶת־שְׁמִ֖י מִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי
(Some words not found in UHB: and=now see/lo/see! I_know that/for/because/then/when to_be_king you_will_be_king and,established in/on/at/with,hand_of,your kingdom_of Yisrael )
Saul is asking David to swear an oath following the custom of his culture by stating the first part of a condition (“if”) but not the second part (“then”). The understood second part would invoke divine punishment for breaking the oath. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explicitly state this second part. Alternate translation: [that if you cut off my seed after me and if you destroy my name from the house of my father, then may he punish you very severely]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
אִם־תַּכְרִ֥ית אֶת־זַרְעִ֖י אַֽחֲרָ֑י וְאִם־תַּשְׁמִ֥יד אֶת־שְׁמִ֖י מִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי
(Some words not found in UHB: and=now see/lo/see! I_know that/for/because/then/when to_be_king you_will_be_king and,established in/on/at/with,hand_of,your kingdom_of Yisrael )
These two phrases mean basically the same thing. For emphasis, Saul is repeating the idea of destroying his family line. If it would be clearer in your language, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [if you completely destroy my family line after I am gone]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
תַּכְרִ֥ית
(Some words not found in UHB: and=now see/lo/see! I_know that/for/because/then/when to_be_king you_will_be_king and,established in/on/at/with,hand_of,your kingdom_of Yisrael )
See how you translated this expression in [2:33](../02/33.md). Saul is speaking as if his family line were a branch that could be cut off from a tree. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [you kill]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
אֶת־זַרְעִ֖י
(Some words not found in UHB: and=now see/lo/see! I_know that/for/because/then/when to_be_king you_will_be_king and,established in/on/at/with,hand_of,your kingdom_of Yisrael )
See how you translated this expression in [20:42](../20/42.md). Saul is speaking of his descendants as if they were the seed from which new plants would grow. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [my descendants]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְאִם־תַּשְׁמִ֥יד & שְׁמִ֖י מִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי
(Some words not found in UHB: and=now see/lo/see! I_know that/for/because/then/when to_be_king you_will_be_king and,established in/on/at/with,hand_of,your kingdom_of Yisrael )
Saul is using the term name by association to mean his memory and legacy as carried on through his descendants. The house of my father means his extended family. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [so that no one who would name me as an ancestor remains alive in my extended family]
24:21-22 Now swear to me . . . you will not kill my family: Having descendants was a way that Saul’s name would endure among the living. David had already sworn such an oath with Jonathan (20:14-17).
OET (OET-LV) [fn] and_now here I_know if/because_that certainly_(reign) you_will_reign and_established in/on/at/with_hand_of_your the_kingdom_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel).
24:21 Note: KJB: 1Sam.24.20
OET (OET-RV) Now promise me by Yahweh that you won’t destroy my name from my family line by killing my descendants.”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
