24:4 Note: KJB: 1Sam.24.3

OET (OET-RV)David’s men whispered to him, “Wow, today what Yahweh told you is coming true when he said, ‘Listen, I’m about to give victory over your enemy, and you will do to him whatever you think is right.’ ” Then David sneaked up and quietly cut a piece off the edge of Sha’ul’s robe.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

הַיּ֜וֹם

(Some words not found in UHB: and,came to/towards pens_of the,sheep on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,road and=there cave and,went_in Shāʼūl to,cover DOM feet_of,himself and,David and,men_of,his in/on/at/with,innermost_parts_of the,cave sitting )

The men are using a common expression of their culture. See how you translated the similar expression in [9:13](../09/13.md). Alternate translation: [what is happening at this time]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

אֲֽשֶׁר־אָמַ֧ר יְהוָ֣ה אֵלֶ֗יךָ הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י נֹתֵ֤ן אֶת־אֹֽיִבְךָ֙\n בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יִטַ֣ב בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [is what Yahweh meant when he told you that he would give your enemy into your hand and that you would do to him just as was good in your eyes]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

אֲֽשֶׁר־אָמַ֧ר יְהוָ֣ה אֵלֶ֗יךָ הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י נֹתֵ֤ן אֶת־אֹֽיִבְךָ֙\n בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יִטַ֣ב בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ

The author has not directly quoted Yahweh as saying this to David at any earlier point in the book, so this could be the way David’s men interpreted the more general statements by Yahweh that he had chosen David to be the next king. (Jonathan’s concern for his own descendants shows that people in this culture expected a king to destroy any enemies who could threaten him.) To show that this is not necessarily something that Yahweh said to David directly, you could make this an indirect quotation, as suggested in the Quotes in Quotes note, even if your language can present one direct quotation within another.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,came to/towards pens_of the,sheep on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,road and=there cave and,went_in Shāʼūl to,cover DOM feet_of,himself and,David and,men_of,his in/on/at/with,innermost_parts_of the,cave sitting )

See how you translated this expression in [4:3](../04/03.md). Alternate translation: [into your power]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

יִטַ֣ב בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,came to/towards pens_of the,sheep on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,road and=there cave and,went_in Shāʼūl to,cover DOM feet_of,himself and,David and,men_of,his in/on/at/with,innermost_parts_of the,cave sitting )

See how you translated this expression in [1:18](../01/18.md). Alternate translation: [you see fit]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיָּ֣קָם דָּוִ֗ד

(Some words not found in UHB: and,came to/towards pens_of the,sheep on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,road and=there cave and,went_in Shāʼūl to,cover DOM feet_of,himself and,David and,men_of,his in/on/at/with,innermost_parts_of the,cave sitting )

See how you translated this term in [1:9](../01/09.md). Alternate translation: [And David took action]

Note 7 topic: translate-symaction

וַיִּכְרֹ֛ת אֶת־כְּנַֽף־הַמְּעִ֥יל אֲשֶׁר־לְשָׁא֖וּל

(Some words not found in UHB: and,came to/towards pens_of the,sheep on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,road and=there cave and,went_in Shāʼūl to,cover DOM feet_of,himself and,David and,men_of,his in/on/at/with,innermost_parts_of the,cave sitting )

This was a symbolic action that demonstrated that David could have killed Saul. David shows the piece of the robe to make that point explicitly in [24:11](../24/11.md), and Saul acknowledges it in [24:18](../24/18.md). If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: [and cut off the edge of Saul’s robe to show that he could have killed him]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בַּלָּֽט

(Some words not found in UHB: and,came to/towards pens_of the,sheep on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,road and=there cave and,went_in Shāʼūl to,cover DOM feet_of,himself and,David and,men_of,his in/on/at/with,innermost_parts_of the,cave sitting )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of secrecy, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [secretly]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

24:4 David’s men believed, as Saul did, that if the circumstances seem right, the Lord is telling you through those circumstances what to do (cp. 23:7).
• Perhaps David was able to cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe without being apprehended because Saul had taken off the robe and laid it aside, or perhaps he fell asleep in the cave.
