OET (OET-LV)And_they_said to_him/it here you you_have_become_old and_sons_of_your not they_have_walked in/on/at/with_ways_of_your now appoint to/for_ourselves a_king to_judge_us like_all_of the_nations.

OET (OET-RV)and requested, “Listen, you’re old now, and your sons don’t follow your example. So appoint a king for us now to lead us like all the other nations.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הִנֵּה֙

see/lo/see!

See how you translated this term in [2:31](../02/31.md).

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּבָנֶ֕יךָ לֹ֥א הָלְכ֖וּ בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ

and,sons_of,your not walk in/on/at/with,ways_of,your

See how you translated the similar expression in [8:3](../08/03.md). Alternate translation: [and your sons do not live the way you have lived]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ

to,judge,us

By us, the Israelite elders mean themselves but perhaps not Samuel, since they are speaking of what they want the situation to be for themselves after he dies. So it may be appropriate to use the exclusive form of “us” in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:5 you are now old, and your sons are not like you: Judges tended to be local leaders; kings, as national leaders, were more capable of uniting a whole nation in times of crisis (8:20). However, a spiritual problem underlay the request for a king (8:7-8).
• Other nations, such as Egypt and Sumer, had monarchies for almost 2,000 years before Samuel’s time.
