If, in the previous verse, you translated the first two questions that Joab suggests David might ask so that there was not a quotation within a quotation, you can continue doing that here. Alternate translation: [He may ask you who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth. He may ask whether it was not a woman who threw a piece of a millstone onto him from the wall so that he died in Thebez. He may ask you why we drew near to the wall]

Joab continues to anticipate that David may use the question form to rebuke the army. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate these questions as statements or as exclamations. Alternate translation: [Remember who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth! It was a woman who threw a piece of a millstone onto him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez! You should not have drawn near to the wall!]

Jerubbesheth is another name for the person who is called Jerubbaal in the book of Judges. (That was a second name that people gave to Gideon.) Here in this book, either the original author or later scribes did not want to reproduce the name “Baal,” since that was the name of a foreign god whom the Israelites detested. So the author or scribes replaced “baal” with “besheth,” a Hebrew word that means “shame.” We recommend that you use the name Jerubbesheth in your translation to reflect this. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain in a footnote that this is the same person known as Jerubbaal or Gideon in Judges.

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [then you shall tell him that his servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
