They would wash their feet when they returned home for the day and intended to do no further work or traveling. When David tells Uriah wash your feet, the implication is that he should consider himself to be finished with his military mission of bringing news from the battlefield. You could indicate this in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and consider yourself to be off duty]
