11:4 It is not clear whether Bathsheba came to David’s palace voluntarily. That no protestations are recorded (cp. 13:12-13) and that she married David, bore him another child, and persuaded him to designate their child as heir (1 Kgs 1:11-21) suggest that she might have been a willing partner. However, Bathsheba mourned for her husband (2 Sam 11:26-27), and only David was condemned for this act (11:27), so she might have been violated against her will.
• The phrase after having her menstrual period (see Lev 15:19-24) is included to show that the child Bathsheba conceived could not possibly have been Uriah’s.
