TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:1-3 David first became king of Judah at Hebron and ruled there 7½ years (3:4; 2 Sam 5:5). The Chronicler omits the account of that period (see 2 Sam 2–4) and focuses on David’s reign over the entire nation for 33½ years, beginning with his covenant . . . with all the elders of Israel at Hebron (see 2 Sam 5:1-5).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-background

(Occurrence 0) In the recent past

(Some words not found in UHB: also/yet yesterday also/yet before also/yet in/on/at/with,was Shāʼūl king you(ms) the,led_out and,the,brought_in DOM Yisrael and=he/it_said YHWH God,your to/for=yourself(m) you(ms) shepherd DOM people,my DOM Yisrael and=you(ms) you(ms)_will_be ruler on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in people,my Yisrael )

This is historical information. Saul had been their king before David.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become a ruler over my people Israel

These two clauses mean basically the same thing and emphasize that Yahweh had chosen David to be king.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) You will shepherd my people Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: also/yet yesterday also/yet before also/yet in/on/at/with,was Shāʼūl king you(ms) the,led_out and,the,brought_in DOM Yisrael and=he/it_said YHWH God,your to/for=yourself(m) you(ms) shepherd DOM people,my DOM Yisrael and=you(ms) you(ms)_will_be ruler on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in people,my Yisrael )

Here ruling over the people is spoken of as shepherding them. Alternate translation: “‘You will care for my people Israel” or “You will lead my people Israel”
