1.18 Filiis tuis, etc.
1.18 Childrens tuis, etc. GREG., Children and daughters as dictum it_is are apostoli and plebes subditæ, who in Yudæa Scriptura vescebantur. Domus, id it_is, Yudæa in persecutione Master cadens apostolos in desperatione obruit. And verus it_is sermo about persecutore to_the_people: Dilectus mine in domo mea he_did scelera multa Yer. 11., And about apostolis: Proximi my/mine from longe steterunt Psal. 37.. Et: Percutiam pastorem, and dispergentur oves Matth. 26., etc. In domo fratris, id it_is, in mayoris fratris convivio Satan obruit filios, because through negligentiam mayorum quærit aditum in mortem minorum; and in alios magis accipit vires, when them who through custodiam aliis præsunt, servire lætitiæ conspicit. Non indeed illi ventri vacabant; but when/with between convivia intentio mentis good minus fervet, minus prævidet.
1:13-19 These attacks destroyed the blessings enumerated in 1:2-3; Job was left alone with the four ominous messengers who came to report and a wife who offered misguided counsel.
• The repetition of while he was still speaking emphasizes the relentlessness of the attacks (see Jer 51:31). The repetition of I am the only one who escaped to tell you emphasizes the total obliteration of Job’s resources.
