TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:2-3 Job was prosperous in sons, daughters, livestock, and servants (cp. Gen 30:43; Deut 7:13; Ps 107:38).
• Numbers such as seven and three (and 7,000 and 3,000) indicate the completeness of the blessing Job experienced (see Job 42:13; see also Pss 127:3-5; 128:3).
• the richest person in that entire area: The figures that catalogue Job’s wealth might not be exact, but they are realistic for a wealthy man of that time (cp. Nabal’s wealth, 1 Sam 25:2).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-background

וַיִּוָּ֥לְדוּ ל֛וֹ שִׁבְעָ֥ה בָנִ֖ים וְשָׁל֥וֹשׁ בָּנֽוֹת

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_were_born to=him/it seven children and, three daughters )

Here and through verse 5, the author is introducing background information about Job that will help readers understand what happens later in the story. In your translation, introduce this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וַיִּוָּ֥לְדוּ ל֛וֹ שִׁבְעָ֥ה בָנִ֖ים וְשָׁל֥וֹשׁ בָּנֽוֹת

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_were_born to=him/it seven children and, three daughters )

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Job had seven sons and three daughters”
