UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

אֶת־מַחֲנֵ֣ה אֲרָ֗ם

DOM army_of ʼArām

Here, the camp of Aram represents the Aramean soldiers. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the Aramean soldiers]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

ס֔וּס

horses

The author is not referring to a specific horse. He means the horses of the Aramean army in general. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use an expression that would be more natural in your language. Alternate translation: [horses]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אָחִ֗יו

his/its=brother

The author is using his brother as a common expression of his culture to mean “his fellow soldier.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [his fellow soldier]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

עָלֵינוּ֩ & לָב֥וֹא עָלֵֽינוּ

on,us & to,come on,us

It might seem that saying against us twice would be to express extra information that would not be natural in your language. If so, you can omit the first instance of this phrase.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

אֶת־מַלְכֵ֧י הַחִתִּ֛ים וְאֶת־מַלְכֵ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם

DOM DOM kings_of (Some words not found in UHB: and,[the]_of,Lord hear DOM army_of ʼArām sound/voice chariots sound/voice horses sound/voice army big/great and=they_said (a)_man to/towards his/its=brother see/lo/see! hired on,us king Yisrael DOM kings_of of,the_Hittites and=DOM kings_of Miʦrayim/(Egypt) to,come on,us )

The author is using the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to represent these kings and their armies. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the armies of the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians]

Note 6 topic: translate-plural

וְאֶת־מַלְכֵ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם

and=DOM kings_of Miʦrayim/(Egypt)

At this time, all of Egypt was ruled by one king. This expression is probably plural because it is in parallel with the expression the kings of the Hittites. It may be more natural in your language to use a singular expression. Alternate translation: [and the king of Egypt]
