Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

10:28 Do this and you will live! Jesus was not suggesting that people would be saved by their works; rather, such love expresses genuine faith and devotion to the Lord.
One day as Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he stopped to teach people. An expert in the Jewish law was there and asked him a question. The expert asked what he should do to obtain eternal life. He and Jesus discussed this question and agreed that a person must love God and love his neighbor. Then the expert asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus answered him with a story that was a parable.
In the story robbers attacked a man and left him bleeding on a road. Two Jewish religious leaders passed the man without helping him. Then a man from the province of Samaria came and helped the man. People from Samaria were called Samaritans. The Jews despised Samaritans, so Jesus’ story surprised the Jews.
The person who treated the injured man with love, as a neighbor should, was a Samaritan. The Jewish religious leaders did not show love to the man. Most Jews considered only their fellow Jews to be their neighbors, but by this parable Jesus taught that all human beings are neighbors. We must love every other human being.
Some other possible section headings are:
The parable about the good foreigner
Who is my neighbor?
The Good Samaritan
Luke is the only gospel writer who includes this parable.
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus said.
Jesus said to him, “You(sing) have given the right answer.
Jesus answered, “That is right/correct.
You have answered correctly: Some other ways to translate this clause are:
You are right (GNT)
That is the right answer (REB)
Jesus said: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as Jesus said is literally “he said to him.” The BSB has made Jesus explicit to make it clear who is speaking. In Greek, this clause occurs before “You have answered correctly.” You should use a natural order in your language.
“Do this and you will live.”
Obey(sing) these commands and you will live forever with God.”
If you(sing) continue to do that, then you will have eternal life.”
Do this: The clause Do this means, “Keep these commandments.” Jesus told the law expert to obey the commandments that he had just quoted in 10:27a–c.
Do: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as Do is in the present tense. It refers to doing something regularly or continually. It does not refer to doing something one time.
and you will live: This is a result clause. Someone who acts in a way that shows that he truly loves God and his neighbors will live forever with God. It refers back to the expert’s question in 10:25, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Some other ways to translate this are:
then you will receive eternal life
and life will be yours (GW)
In some languages it may be necessary to make explicit that the two clauses that the BSB connects with and are a condition and a result. For example:
If you do this, you will have eternal life. (CEV)
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical
τοῦτο ποίει, καὶ ζήσῃ
this (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ αὐτῷ ὀρθῶς Ἀπεκρίθης τοῦτο Ποίει καί ζήσῃ)
Jesus is describing a conditional situation. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express it that way. Alternate translation: [If you do this, then God will give you eternal life]
ζήσῃ
˱you˲_˓will_be˒_living
Alternate translation: [God will give you eternal life]
