BrTrBut now thy kingdom shall not stand to thee, and the Lord shall seek for himself a man after his own heart; and the Lord shall appoint him to be a ruler over his people, because thou hast not kept all that the Lord commanded thee.

Yahweh is seeking a man to be king who will be just the kind of person that he wants him to be, so that he can appoint him to be the leader of his people. Non solum enim Deo Patri, sed ipsi quoque Unigenito, qui venit quærere quod perierat, sic jam non eramus ut in ipso essemus electi ante mundi constitutionem. Quæret ergo sibi, dixit: suum habebit, unde in Latina lingua hoc verbum accipit præpositionem, et acquirit dicitur; quod satis apertum est. Sine præpositione etiam quærere intelligitur acquirere, ex quo lucra vocantur quæstus. Virum juxta cor. Here “heart” represents Yahweh’s desire or will. The phrase “man after his own heart” is an idiom that means to be a person who does what Yahweh desires. Alternate translation: “a man who is the kind of person he wants” or “a man who will obey him” (See also: figs-idiom)
