TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:2 Earlier, Saul had employed 330,000 troops to fight against a much less formidable foe (11:8). The selection here of 3,000 special troops probably does not reflect overconfidence (cp. Josh 7:3-4). Rather, Saul likely recognized the need for a smaller, highly trained, elite militia to deal with the troublesome Philistines (see 1 Sam 14:52).
• Micmash was located in Benjamin about two miles northwest of Saul’s home in Gibeah.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיִּבְחַר־ל֨וֹ שָׁא֜וּל שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֮ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל֒

and,chose to=him/it Shāʼūl three_of thousand from,Israel

The author is using this phrase to introduce a new event in the story. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new event.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֮ & וַיִּהְי֨וּ & אַלְפַּ֗יִם & וְאֶ֗לֶף

three_of thousand & and=they_were & two_thousand & and,a_thousand

The author is leaving out some words that in many languages a sentence would need to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [3,000 soldiers … And 2,000 of these soldiers … and 1,000 of these soldiers]

Note 3 topic: writing-participants

י֣וֹנָתָ֔ן

Yōnātān/(Jonathan)

The author is using this phrase to introduce Jonathan as a new participant in the story. He introduces him more fully as “Saul’s son” in [13:16](../13/16.md). Your language may have its own way of introducing new participants that you can use here in your translation.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הָעָ֔ם

the,people

The author assumes that readers will recognize that in this context, the term people refers to the men of Israel who were able to fight as soldiers. That is also the meaning in the frequent occurrences of this term in the rest of the chapter(except for in [13:4](../13/04.md)). Alternate translation: [the soldiers]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָֽיו

(a)_man to,tent_of,his

The author is using one kind of home, a tent, to represent homes of all kinds. (Some Israelites lived in houses.) See how you translated a similar expression in [4:10](../04/10.md). Alternate translation: [each one to his own home]
