ULT And the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day. And Saul had made the people swear, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats food until the evening and I take vengeance from my enemies.” So all the people had not tasted food.

UST Before Saul’s soldiers went to the battle, Saul declared to them solemnly, “I do not want any of you to eat any food before this evening, before we have defeated all our enemies. If anyone eats anything, Yahweh will curse him.” So none of the Israeli soldiers ate any food, and they became faint because they were very hungry.

14:24 The true reading seems to be οὐκ ἠρίστα. Tertullian quotes 'et tota terra non prandebat.'

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

14:24 With his oath, Saul forced abstinence from food on men who were already hungry and exhausted from battle. This oath was probably a pagan-like attempt to manipulate God into giving them a favorable result (cp. notes on Exod 23:26; 25:22; 32:4).
• That Saul said my enemies rather than “our enemies” reflects his self-centered pride.
