TSNTyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

בֶּן־אֲבִיאֵֽל

son_of ʼAⱱī\sup_ʼēl

Since the author is referring to two men, Kish and Ner, it may be more natural in your language to use the plural form. Alternate translation: [were the sons of Abiel]

Note 2 topic: translate-names

אֲבִיאֵֽל

ʼAⱱī\sup_ʼēl

The word Abiel is the name of a man, the father of both Kish and Ner.
