TSNTyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיַּ֣עַל יוֹנָתָ֗ן עַל־יָדָיו֙ וְעַל־רַגְלָ֔יו

and=he/it_ascended Yōnātān/(Jonathan) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in hands_of,his and,on feet_of,his

The author assumes that readers will understand that Jonathan had to climb this way because the cliff was extremely steep. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [The cliff was so steep that Jonathan had to go up it on his hands and on his feet]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַיַּ֣עַל & עַל־יָדָיו֙ וְעַל־רַגְלָ֔יו

and=he/it_ascended & on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in hands_of,his and,on feet_of,his

The author is using a common expression of his culture to describe a way of climbing. Your language may have a comparable expression that you could use in your translation. You could also use plain language. Alternate translation: [went up on all fours] or [climbed up using his hands as well as his feet]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙

and=they_fell

The pronoun they refers to the Philistine soldiers who were defending this position. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [And the Philistine soldiers fell]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יוֹנָתָ֔ן

and=they_fell to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Yōnātān/(Jonathan)

The author is using the term fell by association to mean that these soldiers died in battle, as in [4:10](../04/10.md). He is using the term face by association to mean that these soldiers were in front of Jonathan, as in [1:12](../01/12.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use equivalent expressions or plain language. Alternate translation: [And they died as Jonathan attacked the soldiers who were in front of him]
