OET JER chapter 50

50 Yahweh gave the prophet Yirmeyah (Jeremiah) this message concerning Babylon, the country of the Chaldeans:[ref]

2 Make a report to the nations and get them to listen to it.

Raise a signal flag and cause them to listen—don’t conceal it.

Tell them that Babylon will be captured and their ‘god’ Marduk (also called ‘Bel’) will be humiliated.

Marduk will be completely disgraced—

its replicas will be humiliated as its idols will be shattered.

3 A nation from the north will come against it, and make their land into ruins.

No one will live in it—people and animals will all flee away.

50:4 The return of Yisrael and Yehudah

Both kingdoms

4 Yahweh declares that at a future time, the people of Yisrael and the people of Yehudah,

will join together to go to their god Yahweh with weeping and a desire to worship him. 5 They’ll ask the way to Tsiyyon (Zion) and will set off toward it

to join themselves to Yahweh with a permanent commitment that will never be forgotten.

6 My people have been a lost flock.

Their shepherds have led them astray in the mountains.

They’ve gone from hill to hill.

They went—they’d forgotten the place where they’d lived.

7 Everyone who found them devoured them

and their enemies told themselves that they weren’t guilty

because the people they attacked had sinned against Yahweh who was their true home—

Yahweh, who their ancestors had placed their hope in.

8 You Judeans, leave Babylon.

≈ Get out from the land of the Chaldeans.

Be like male goats that leave ahead of the rest of the flock,[ref]

9 because listen, I’m about to set in motion and raise up a group of powerful nations from the north against Babylon.

They’ll line up against her—Babylon will be captured from there.

Their arrows will be like a skilled warrior who always returns and never empty-handed.

50:10 Babylon’s fall

10 Babylon (Heb. Chaldea) will become plunder.

All those who plunder it will take everything they want.

That is Yahweh’s declaration

11 because you’re so happy Babylon—your people celebrate the plundering of my inheritance.

You skip around like a calf stamping in its pasture.

≈ You neigh like a powerful horse.

12 Your mother will be terribly ashamed—

≈ the one who bore you will be embarrassed.

Listen, she’ll become the least of nations—

a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.

13 Due to Yahweh’s severe anger, Babylon won’t remain inhabited, but will become a complete ruin.

Everyone who passes by will be appalled, and will hiss because of all its wounds.

14 You armies,, line yourselves up all around Babylon—

everyone who uses a bow and arrows must shoot at it.

Don’t hold back any of your arrows, because it has disobeyed Yahweh.

15 Shout together all of you who are around the city.

It has surrendered—its towers have been taken over.

Its walls are torn down, because that is Yahweh’s vengeance.

Avenge yourselves on Babylon—

do to it just like what it’s done to others.

16 Destroy both the Babylonian farmer who sows seed

and the one who uses a sickle at harvest time.

Instead of the oppressor’s sword, let each person return to their own people—

let everyone flee back to their own region.

50:17 Yisrael’s return

17 Israel is like sheep that were scattered and driven away by lions.

Firstly, the Assyrian king devoured its meat,

then after that, the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar chomped on its bones.

18 Therefore Yisrael’s god, Commander-in-chief Yahweh, says this:

Listen, I’m about to punish the Babylonian king and his country,

just as I punished the Assyrian king.

19 Then I’ll restore Yisrael to its homeland—

it will graze on Mt. Carmel and in the Bashan region.

≈ then it will be satisfied in the hill country of Efrayim and Gilead.

20 Yahweh says that at that time,

Yisrael’s disobedience won’t exist

≈ and no wickedness will be found in Yehudah

because I’ll forgive those that I leave as a remnant.

50:21 Yahweh’s judgement for Babylon

21 Go up against the Meratayim region in Babylon

as well as Pekod’s inhabitants.

Attack them and ensure that they’re eliminated.

That is Yahweh’s declaration—make sure to do everything that I’m commanding you to do.

22 There’s a sound of battle and terrible destruction across the land.

23 How the ‘hammer’ of all the lands has itself been cut apart and destroyed.

How Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations.

24 I set a trap for you and you were caught, Babylon, and you didn’t even know it.

You were found and captured, because you went against Yahweh.

25 Yahweh has opened his armoury and is bringing out the weapons for carrying out his anger.

There’s work for the master, Commander-in-chief Yahweh, in Babylon—the land of the Chaldeans.

26 Come to it from far away.

Open its store-houses full of grain.

Pile everything up in heaps.

Completely destroy everything—don’t leave anyone alive.

27 Kill all its young bulls—send them off for slaughter.

They won’t end well because their moment has come—the time for their punishment.

28 There’s the sound of those fleeing—escaping from Babylon

to anounce in Tsiyyon (Zion) that our god Yahweh is taking vengeance—

vengeance for what was done to his temple.

29 Summon the archers against Babylon—all those who use bows and arrows.

Surround it completely and don’t let anyone escape.

Repay it for what it’s done.

Do to it what it did to others

because it had defied Yahweh, Yisrael’s holy one,[ref]

30 so their young men will fall in the city squares,

and all their fighting men will be killed on that day.

That is Yahweh’s declaration.

31 Listen, Commander-in-chief Yahweh declares:

I’m against you, you proud nation

because your time is up, you proud one—

the time has come for me to punish you.

32 So the proud one will stumble and fall,

and no one will be there to help it up.

I’ll light a fire in its cities and it will devour everything around it.

33 Commander-in-chief Yahweh says this:

The Yisrael’s people are oppressed,

as are the people from Yehudah.

All those who captured them have kept hold of them—

they’ve refused to let them go.

34 The one who paid the price to free them is strong.

His name is Commander-in-chief Yahweh.

He’ll successfully plead their case,

in order to bring peace and stability to the land,

and to cause turmoil for Babylon’s inhabitants.

35 Yahweh declares that war is coming to the Babylonians (Heb. Chaldeans)

including its inhabitants, leaders, and wise men.

5 Tsiyyōn/(Zion) they _will _ask _for will _be_the _direction hither faces _of_their come and_they _will _join _themselves to YHWH a _covenant _of perpetuity not it _will _be _forgotten.
6 sheep lost they _have _become[fn] people _of_my shepherds _of_their they_have _caused _them _to _wander mountains wwww[fn] from_hill to hill they _have _gone they _have _forgotten place _of_their _resting.
7 All _of those _of_who_found _them they_devoured _them and_foes _of_their they _said not we _are _guilty because that they _have _sinned to/for_YHWH the_habitation _of righteousness and_the _hope _of their _ancestors _of_their YHWH.
8 take _flight from_the _midst _of Bāⱱel and_from_the_land _of the_ones_from _Kasdiy go _forth[fn] and_be like_male _goats to_(the)_face _of/in _front _of/before the_flock.
9 If/because HERE I am_about _to _rouse and_I_am_about _to _bring _up on Bāⱱel an _assembly _of nations great from_a _land _of the_north and_they _will _line _up to/for_her/it from_there it _will _be _captured arrows _of_its will_be_like _a _warrior who_miscarries not he _returns empty.
10 And_it _will _become Chaldea (into)_plunder all _of those _of_who_plunder _it they _will _be _satisfied the _utterance _of YHWH.
11 If/because you _are _rejoicing[fn] if/because you _are _gloating[fn][fn] Oh_you(pl)_who_plunder _of inheritance _of_(of)_my if/because you _are _skipping _about[fn] like_a _heifer threshing and_you _are _neighing[fn] like _(the)_horses.
12 mother _of_your(pl) She _will _be _ashamed exceedingly she _will _be _abashed the_one _of_who_bore _you(pl) THERE the_last _of nations a _wilderness a _wilderness and_a _wilderness _plain.
13 From_the _severe _anger _of YHWH not it _will _remain and_it _will _be a _waste of _it _of_all every one _who_passes _by at Bāⱱel he _will _be _appalled and_he _will _hiss on all _of wounds _of_its.
14 Line _up on Bāⱱel all _around Oh _all _of those _who_bend _of (of)_a _bow shoot to_her/it do _not spare (to) an _arrow if/because to/for_YHWH it _has _sinned.
15 Shout _out on/upon_it(f) all _around it _will _give hand _of_its towers _of_its they _will _fall[fn] walls _of_its they _will _be _torn _down if/because is_the _vengeance _of YHWH it avenge _yourselves(pl) on_it just_as it _has _done do to/for_her/it.
16 Cut _off the_sower from_Bāⱱel and_one _who_wields _of (of)_a _sickle at_a _time _of harvest from_face/in _front _of the _sword _of the _oppressor everyone to people _of_his _own they _will _turn and_everyone to_his _own _of_land they _will _flee.
17 is_sheep scattered Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) which_lions they _have _driven _away the_first he_devoured _it the _king _of ʼAshshūr and_this the_last he_gnawed _its _bones Nəⱱūkadneʦʦar the _king _of Bāⱱel.
18 for_so/thus/hence thus YHWH he _says soldiers/messengers the _god _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) HERE_I am_about _to _visit_judgement to the _king _of Bāⱱel and_near/to land _of_his just_as I _visited_judgement to the _king _of ʼAshshūr.
19 And_I _will _restore DOM Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) to pasture _of_its and_it _will _graze (the)_Karmel/(Carmel) and_(the)_Bāshān and_in_the _hill _country _of ʼEfrayim and_(the)_Gilˊād appetite _of_its it _will _be _satisfied.
20 In _the_days the_those and_at_time (the)_that the _utterance _of YHWH it _will _be _sought DOM the _iniquity _of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) and_not _existing_he and_DOM the _sins _of Yəhūdāh/(Judah) and_not they _will _be _found if/because I _will _forgive (to)_those_whom I _will _leave _as _a _remnant.
21 On the_earth/land of _Mərātayim go _up on/upon_it(f) and_near/to the _inhabitants _of Pəqōd kill and_totally _destroy after_them the _utterance _of YHWH and_do according_to _all that I _commanded_you(ms).
22 a _sound _of battle on _the_earth and_destruction great.
23 How it _has _been _cut _off and_ the _hammer _of _it _has _been _broken of _all _of the_earth/land how it _has _become (into)_a_horror Bāⱱel among_nations.
24 I _laid _a _trap to/for_you(fs) and_also you _were _caught Oh _Bāⱱel and_you not you _knew you _were _found and_also you _were _caught if/because with_YHWH you _engaged _in _strife.
25 YHWH He _has _opened DOM armoury _of_his and_he _has _brought _out DOM the _weapons _of his _indignation _of_his if/because is_a _work it of_the_of_master YHWH soldiers/messengers in_land of_the_ones_from _Kasdiy.
26 Come to/for_her/it from _the_end/extremity open granaries _of_its pile_it _up like heaps and_totally_destroy _it not let _it _belong to/for_her/it a _remnant.
27 Kill all _of bulls _of_its _young let _them _go _down to_slaughter woe on_them if/because day _of_their it _has _come the _time _of their _punishment _of_their.
28 the_sound _of those _who_flee and_escapees from_the _land _of Bāⱱel to_announce in_Tsiyyōn/(Zion) DOM the _vengeance _of YHWH god _of_our the _vengeance _of his _temple _of_his.
29 Summon against Bāⱱel archers all _of those _who_bend _of (of)_a _bow encamp on/upon_it(f) all _around not let _it _belong[fn][fn] escape repay to/for_her/it according_to _of_its _deed[s] according_to _all that it _has _done do to/for_her/it if/because (to) YHWH it _has _acted _presumptuously against the _holy_one_of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel).

31 here_I am_against_you Oh _presumption the _utterance _of my_master YHWH soldiers/messengers if/because day _of_your it _has _come the_time when_I_will _visit _you.
32 And_ presumption _it _will _stumble and_it _will _fall and_there_will_not_be to_him/it one _who_raises _up and_I _will _kindle fire in_cities _of_its and_it _will _devour all _of around _of_it.
33 thus YHWH he _says soldiers/messengers the _people _of are_oppressed of _Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) and_the _sons of _Yəhūdāh/(Judah) together and_all captors _of_their they _have _kept _hold on_them they _have _refused to_let _them _go.
34 Redeemer _of_their is_strong is_YHWH soldiers/messengers his/its_name certainly _(conduct) he _will _conduct DOM case _of_their so _as to _give _rest _to DOM the_earth/land and_to _cause _disquiet to_the _inhabitants _of Bāⱱel.
35 A _sword on the_ones_from _Kasdiy the _utterance _of YHWH and_near/to the _inhabitants _of Bāⱱel and_near/to officials _of_its and_near/to its _wise _of_people.
36 A _sword against the _empty_talkers and_they _will _become _fools a _sword against its _of_warriors and_they _will _be _shattered.
37 A _sword against horses _of_its and_near/to chariotry _of_its and_near/to every _of (the)_foreigner who is_in_the _midst _of_of _it and_they _will _be (into)_women a _sword against treasuries _of_its and_they _will _be _plundered.
38 A _drought against waters _of_its and_they _will _dry _up if/because is_a _land _of idols it and_in_terrors they _will _act _like _mad _people.
39 For_so/thus/hence wilderness-dwellers they _will _dwell with hyenas and_they _will _dwell in_it daughters _of an _ostrich and_not it _will _remain again to_perpetuity and_not it _will _settle until a _generation and_a _generation.
40 Like_the _overthrow _of god DOM Şədom and_DOM ˊAmorāh/(Gomorrah) and_DOM neighbours _of_its the _utterance _of YHWH not he _will _dwell there anyone and_not he _will _sojourn in_it a _child _of humankind.
41 THERE a _people is_about _to _come from_the_north and_a _nation great and_kings many they _will _be _roused from_the_remotest _parts _of the_earth.
42 Bow and_javelin they _will _take _hold _of will _be_cruel they and_not they _will _have _mercy sound _of_their like_sea it _roars and_on horses they _will _ride they_were_arranged like_a _man for_battle on_you Oh _daughter _of Bāⱱel.
43 the _king _of He _heard of _Bāⱱel DOM report _of_their hands _of_his and_they _dropped distress it_took _hold _of _him anguish like _(the)_who]_gives _birth.
44 THERE like_a _lion which_it _goes _up from_the _thicket[s]_of the _Yardēn/(Jordan) to pastureland _of an _ever-flowing_stream if/because I _will _act _in _a _moment I_will _cause _them _to _run[fn] from_on_it and_whoever is_chosen to_her/it I _will _appoint if/because who is_like_me and_who will_he _summon _me and_who this is_a _shepherd who he _will _stand before_me.
