OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

הֶ֤רֶף מִמֶּ֨נִּי֙

let_~_alone from,me

Here, Release from me is a Hebrew idiom that means to not interfere. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Leave me be] or [Stand aside]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

וְאַשְׁמִידֵ֔ם וְאֶמְחֶ֣ה אֶת־שְׁמָ֔ם מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם

and,destroy,them and,blot_out DOM their=name from=under the=heavens

These two clauses mean basically the same thing. The second clause emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the clauses with a word that shows that the second clause is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: [and I will destroy them; indeed, I will blot out their name from under the heavens]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְאֶמְחֶ֣ה אֶת־שְׁמָ֔ם מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם

and,blot_out DOM their=name from=under the=heavens

Yahweh speaks of destroying the Israelites as if he were blotting out a word written on paper. Yahweh means that he will blot out the memory of their name, and by extension, everything about them. See how you translated the very similar phrase “cause their name to perish from under the heavens” in [7:24](../07/24.md). Alternate translation: [and no one will know they ever existed]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ אֽוֹתְךָ֔ לְגוֹי

and,make DOM,you to=(a)_nation

The implication is that Yahweh will cause Moses to have so many descendants that those descendants will become a nation to replace the Israelites. This nation would be mightier and greater than the Israelites. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and I will make a nation from you and your descendants, one that is]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:14 erase their name: The Lord threatened to destroy Israel’s identity and existence (see study note on 7:24).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
