Changing Eliakim’s name was a symbolic action by which Neco asserted his sovereignty over Judah and its ruler. (Since Eliakim means “God will establish” while Jehoiakim means “Yahweh will establish,” it is possible that Neco allowed Eliakim to choose his own new name. The symbolic significance was in the fact that Neco forced him to change his name.)
