Since any contact with a dead body, including walking over a grave, made a person ceremonially unclean ([Numbers 19:16](../../num/19/16.md)), throwing the dust of the Asherah pole that had been in the temple onto a grave was a symbolic action by which Josiah rendered the remains of this object unclean and completely unsuitable for use in worship. In this verse, the word grave is singular in form, but it refers to all of the graves in this area outside Jerusalem. It appears that people who could not afford a tomb cut into rock were buried in a common plot there.
