SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:14–23: Jesus proved that he did not use Satan’s power

This section is not explicitly connected with the preceding section in time, place, or theme.

In this section, Jesus cast out a demon that made a man mute (11:14). Some people who were there commented to each other that Jesus was casting out demons by the power of Satan (11:15). Jesus gave them two reasons why this could not be true (11:17–19). He concluded that he cast out demons by the power of God (11:20). Then he told a parable (11:21–22) that showed that he is stronger than Satan.

Some other headings for this section are:

Jesus is stronger than Satan

Jesus and Beelzebub

Jesus sends unclean spirits away by defeating Satan

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 12:22–30 and Mark 3:20–27.

11:16

And others tested Him by demanding a sign from heaven.

others: The word others refers to yet a different group in the crowd. This group addressed Jesus directly. Introduce this other group in a way that is natural in your language.

tested Him: The Greek word that the BSB here translates as tested means “to examine in order to determine certain characteristics.”This same Greek word also means “tempted” in some contexts. (For example, in Luke 4:2 the BSB translates this word as “tempted.”) This is why the KJV translates this word as “tempted” here in 11:16. The context determines its exact meaning. Here certain people wanted to examine Jesus to determine whether he came from God and whether his power came from God. They did this by asking him for a sign from heaven.

In the context of 11:17a, these people were probably not trying honestly to determine the truth about Jesus’ authority. They were probably trying to discredit him. In some languages, it may be clearer to express this negative aspect of “tested.” For example:

Others wanted to trap Jesus (GNT)

by demanding: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as demanding is literally “seeking.” Another way to translate this is:

asking for (NIV)

a sign from heaven: Here the word heaven is a euphemism for God. So the phrase a sign from heaven means “a sign from God.” For example:

a sign from God (CEV)

Some other ways to translate a sign from heaven are:

a miraculous sign from heaven (NLT)

a miracle to show that God approved of him (GNT)

See heaven, Meaning 3, in the Glossary.

These people wanted Jesus to do a miracle to prove to them that he drove out the demon by God’s power. One way to translate this would be:

Others tested him by asking him to do a miracle to show that his power came from God.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἕτεροι δὲ πειράζοντες

others (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἕτεροι Δέ πειράζοντες σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐζήτουν πάρʼ αὐτοῦ)

The pronoun him refers to Jesus. Alternate translation: [Other people challenged Jesus]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐζήτουν παρ’ αὐτοῦ

˓a˒_sign from ˓the˒_sky ˓were˒_seeking (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἕτεροι Δέ πειράζοντες σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐζήτουν πάρʼ αὐτοῦ)

Luke uses the term heaven to refer to God by association, since heaven is the abode of God. Alternate translation: [demanding that he ask God to do a miracle]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐζήτουν παρ’ αὐτοῦ

˓a˒_sign from ˓the˒_sky ˓were˒_seeking (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἕτεροι Δέ πειράζοντες σημεῖον ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐζήτουν πάρʼ αὐτοῦ)

The implication is that the people who were challenging Jesus wanted him to ask God for a miracle to prove that his authority came from God. Alternate translation: [by demanding that he ask God to do a miracle to show that God had given him his authority]
