OET (OET-LV)And_from_there of_him of_having_come_out, the scribes and the Farisaios_party began to_be_resenting him terribly, and to_be_interrogating him about more things,

OET (OET-RV)Once Yeshua left that house, the religious teachers and the Pharisee party started strongly resenting him, and started a plan of asking him more questions

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:37–54: Jesus criticized the Pharisees and the teachers of the law

In this section, a Pharisee invited Jesus to his house for a meal. The Pharisee was surprised that Jesus did not ritually wash his hands before he ate. Jesus then criticized the Pharisees because they carefully observed outward rituals but neglected true devotion to God. He specifically warned the Pharisees about three ways in which they displeased God. He then directed three additional warnings to the teachers of the law.

Some other headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Criticism of the Religious Leaders

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 23:1–36 and Mark 12:38–40.

11:53a

As Jesus went on from there, the scribes and Pharisees

As Jesus went on from there: There is a textual issue here. (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the words “and he having left from there.” For example, the NASB says: “When He left there.” The BSB, NIV, GNT, RSV, NJB, NET, NASB, REB, GW, CEV, JBP, and NCV follow these manuscripts. (2) Other Greek manuscripts have the words “and he saying these things to them.” For example, the NLT96 says: “As Jesus finished speaking.” The KJV and NLT follow these manuscripts. It is recommended that you follow option (1). This option has the earliest manuscript support and is followed by nearly every English version. However, if a major language version in your area follows option (2), you may want to put that option in a footnote. For more information, see Swanson, p. 220; TRT, p. 250; and Blight 2007a, p. 547. The word there refers to the Pharisee’s house mentioned in 11:37. During the entire section that begins in 11:37, Jesus spoke from the Pharisee’s house.

In some languages, it may be more natural to make this information explicit. For example:

After he had left the house (REB)

the scribes: The Greek word that the BSB translates as the scribes is a synonym of the Greek word that the BSB translates as “experts in the law” in 11:52a. It refers to the same group of men. It is recommended that you translate both terms in the same way.

The term scribes also occurs in 9:22b. See also teacher of the law in the Glossary.

Pharisees: This word also occurs in 11:37a.

11:53b

began to oppose Him bitterly

began to oppose Him bitterly: The phrase began to oppose Him bitterly indicates that the Jewish leaders became very angry with Jesus, and they began to treat him as their enemy.

Some other ways to translate the phrase began to oppose Him bitterly are:

began to be very hostile toward him (NRSV)

began to give him trouble (NCV)

began to criticize him bitterly (GNT)

Be sure not to translate this in a way that implies physical opposition. The Jewish leaders opposed him in their thoughts and words.

They continued to be angry with Jesus and oppose him until he died months later. To show this, it may be helpful to include a phrase such as “From that day on.” For example:

From that day on, the Pharisees and teachers opposed him fiercely

11:53c

and to ply Him with questions about many things,

and to ply Him with questions about many things: The clause ply Him with questions refers to asking many questions in a hostile manner. From that time until his death, the Jewish leaders began to ask Jesus many questions that they thought would be difficult for him to answer. They did this to try to trap him.

Some other ways to translate this clause are:

and to ask him hostile questions about many things (NET)

and tried to provoke him with many questions (NLT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-endofstory

κἀκεῖθεν ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Κἀκεῖθεν ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ ἤρξαντο οἱ γραμματεῖς καί οἱ Φαρισαῖοι δεινῶς ἐνέχειν καί ἀποστοματίζειν αὐτόν περί πλειόνων)

In this verse and the next verse, Luke comments on what happened as a result of the episode he has just related. Alternate translation: [After Jesus left the Pharisee’s house]
