SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–12: Jesus warned and encouraged his disciples

In the previous section, Jesus criticized the Pharisees and teachers of the law. They responded by being hostile to him. Here in Section 12:1–12 a large crowd gathered around Jesus and his disciples. Jesus spoke first to his disciples. He warned them that they must not be hypocrites like the Pharisees. His disciples should not be afraid to declare that they were loyal to him. They should not fear people, but they should fear and respect God, and they should never insult the Holy Spirit. Jesus encouraged them to remember that they were valuable to God. He assured them that the Holy Spirit would help them when people persecuted them.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Another possible heading for this section is:

Warnings and Encouragements (NIV)

Some versions have divided this section into three shorter sections. Each section has one or more parallel passages. If you choose to divide this section, here are some examples of headings that you can use.

12:1–3

A Warning against Hypocrisy (GNT) -or- Jesus warned his disciples not to be like the Pharisees

(There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 10:26–27.)

12:4–7

The One Whom People Should Fear -or- Jesus told his disciples whom they should fear

(There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 10:28–31.)

12:8–12

Confessing and Rejecting Christ (GNT) -or- Don’t Be Ashamed of Jesus (NCV)

(There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 10:32–33, 12:32, 10:19–20.)

12:10a

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven: The word And introduces another statement that talks about people saying something about Jesus, the Son of Man. In 12:9 Jesus referred to people who denied him. They publicly said that they did not follow him as their Master. Here in 12:10 Jesus referred to anyone who speaks a word against him. He indicated that God can forgive a person who speaks against Jesus.

Jesus was referring here to the possibility of forgiveness if the person repents of speaking against him. He did not mean that everyone who speaks against him will automatically be forgiven. In some languages it may be necessary to indicate this implied information in some way. For example:

Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven (NCV)

everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man: The phrase everyone who speaks a word against means “anyone who says something bad about.” This is a very general description. It can include statements that are hostile, disrespectful, or insulting.

the Son of Man: Here Jesus again referred to himself as the Son of Man, as he did in 12:8b. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit here, as well as in 12:8b. For example:

against me, the Son of Man

See the note at 11:30b.

will be forgiven: In this context the verb will be forgiven indicates that God will choose not to punish those people for their sin of speaking against Jesus. God will cancel their guilt and treat them as though they had not spoken in that way.

Some possible ways to translate will be forgiven are:

will be pardoned for their sin

their guilt will be erased/removed

the wrong that they have done will be forgotten/canceled

See how you translated the verb “forgive” in 11:4a.

The phrase will be forgiven is a passive verb phrase. It contains implied information about who forgives and what is forgiven. The implied information is:

God will forgive them for their sin of speaking against the Son of Man.

In some languages it may be necessary to translate this verb as an active verb and to make some of this implied information explicit. For example:

God will pardon them for this sin of theirs

God will erase the guilt of that sin

12:10b

but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

but: The Greek conjunction that the BSB here translates as but introduces a contrast between who God will forgive (12:10a) and who he will not forgive (12:10b).

whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit: The Greek word that the BSB translates as blasphemes can refer to speaking evil of either God or people. Here Jesus was referring to anyone who insults or dishonors the Holy Spirit of God. From the passage in Matthew 12:22–32, it appears that Jesus was referring specifically to people who saw the work of the Holy Spirit and said that it was the work of Satan. This is what the Jewish leaders had done in 11:15.

Some other ways to translate the word blasphemes are:

slanders (REB)

speaks against (NCV)

dishonors (GW)

Holy Spirit: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as Holy Spirit refers to the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is God, together with God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit is Spirit in the sense that he is a living being who does not have a physical body. He is Holy in the sense that he is God and unique from every other being. He is perfect in every way and is completely pure and sinless.

Some ways to translate Holy Spirit are:

Spirit/Breath of God

Holy/Sacred Spirit

Do not imply that the Holy Spirit is like the ghost of a dead person or that God has died.

Translate this term consistently with the way you translated it in 10:21a.

will not be forgiven: As in 12:10a, if you need to supply a subject, you should supply “God.” For example:

God will not forgive him/them

Here Jesus is referring to himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person. Alternate translation: [me, the Son of Man]

See how you translated this title in [5:24](../05/24.md). Alternate translation: [me, the Messiah]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ

˓will_be_being˒_forgiven ˱to˲_him

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [God will forgive]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

not ˓will_be_being˒_forgiven

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [God will not extend forgiveness]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

12:10 The Holy Spirit draws people to God. One who blasphemes the Holy Spirit rejects his testimony about Jesus and so rejects God. This is the unpardonable sin (see study notes on Matt 12:31-32).

OET (OET-LV)And everyone who will_be_saying a_message against the son of_ the _Man, will_be_being_forgiven to_him, but to_the one having_slandered against the holy spirit, ˓will˒_ not _be_being_forgiven.

OET (OET-RV)Everyone who says something against humanity’s child will be forgiven, but those who speak against the holy spirit won’t be forgiven.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
