SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–12: Jesus warned and encouraged his disciples

In the previous section, Jesus criticized the Pharisees and teachers of the law. They responded by being hostile to him. Here in Section 12:1–12 a large crowd gathered around Jesus and his disciples. Jesus spoke first to his disciples. He warned them that they must not be hypocrites like the Pharisees. His disciples should not be afraid to declare that they were loyal to him. They should not fear people, but they should fear and respect God, and they should never insult the Holy Spirit. Jesus encouraged them to remember that they were valuable to God. He assured them that the Holy Spirit would help them when people persecuted them.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Another possible heading for this section is:

Warnings and Encouragements (NIV)

Some versions have divided this section into three shorter sections. Each section has one or more parallel passages. If you choose to divide this section, here are some examples of headings that you can use.

12:1–3

A Warning against Hypocrisy (GNT) -or- Jesus warned his disciples not to be like the Pharisees

(There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 10:26–27.)

12:4–7

The One Whom People Should Fear -or- Jesus told his disciples whom they should fear

(There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 10:28–31.)

12:8–12

Confessing and Rejecting Christ (GNT) -or- Don’t Be Ashamed of Jesus (NCV)

(There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 10:32–33, 12:32, 10:19–20.)

12:9a

But whoever denies Me before men

But: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as But introduces a contrast. This verse describes a situation that is a complete contrast to the situation in 12:8. It functions as a warning. Translate in a way that is natural in your language for presenting such a contrast.

whoever denies Me before men: The Greek word that the BSB translates as denies means “disowns, repudiates, renounces.” This phrase whoever denies Me before men refers to a person who says publicly that he is not a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus was referring to anyone who did this. Make sure that your translation of this phrase fits your choice of subject in 12:8a (for example: “anyone,” “everyone,” “all,” or “those”). Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

those who reject me publicly (GNT)

all who stand before others and say they do not believe in me (NCV)

anyone who denies in front of other people here on earth that he is my follower

12:9b

will be denied before the angels of God.

will be denied before the angels of God: The verb that the BSB translates as will be denied is a passive verb. If it is more natural to use an active verb, the implied subject is “I” (Jesus). For example:

I will disown him before God’s angels.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὁ δὲ ἀρνησάμενός με ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων

the_‹one› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ δέ ἀρνησάμενος μέ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπαρνηθήσεται ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ)

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state explicitly what someone having denied might have said. Alternate translation: [but whoever denies to others that he is my disciple]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων

before ¬the people

Here, before means “in front of” or “in the presence of.” Alternate translation: [in the presence of other people] or [so other people can hear]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

τῶν ἀνθρώπων

¬the people

Here, Jesus is using the term men in a generic sense that includes all people. Alternate translation: [other people]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀπαρνηθήσεται

˓will_be_being˒_renounced

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will would do the action. Alternate translation: [the Son of Man will deny that he belongs to him] or (if you translated with the first person) [I will deny that he belongs to me]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων

before ¬the before the angels

Here, before means “in front of” or “in the presence of.” Alternate translation: [in the presence of the angels]
