OET (OET-LV)You_all_are_supposing that I_arrived to_give peace on the earth?
No, I_am_saying to_you_all, but rather division.

OET (OET-RV)You all probably expect that I came to bring peace to the earth. No, I’m telling you, not peace but conflict,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:49–53: Jesus’ message will cause divisions among people

In this section Jesus was still talking to his disciples. He told them that a difficult time was coming. He warned them that in many families, some family members would follow him and some would not. This would cause family members to disagree and separate.

Some other headings for this section are:

Jesus Causes Division (NCV)

Not Peace but Division (NIV)

There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 10:34–36.

12:51a

Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth?

Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth?: This is a rhetorical question. Jesus knew that many people were thinking that he had come to bring peace on earth, but they were wrong. He used the question to emphasize that he had not come to bring peace on the earth.

Some ways to translate this emphasis are:

Translate this emphasis in a way that is natural in your language.

peace: In this context, the word peace refers to an absence of war or conflict.

See peace, Meaning 3, in the Glossary.

12:51b

No, I tell you, but division.

No, I tell you: The word No is the explicit answer to the rhetorical question in 12:51a. Jesus was denying that he came to bring peace. In some languages it may not be natural for Jesus to answer his own question with “no.” Consider how to express the denial in a natural way in your language.

The phrase I tell you adds emphasis to what Jesus was saying. For example:

No indeed! (CEV)

See the note on this phrase in 12:27c.

In some languages, it may be natural to combine the answer with the next phrase. For example:

I tell you that I did not come to do that.

but division: The phrase but division means “I have come to bring division rather than peace.” The word division here means that people would be divided among themselves. Some would accept Jesus’ message and others would not. As a result, they would belong to separate groups, and they would oppose each other. Some other ways to translate division are:

instead, I have come to divide/separate people

I came to make people choose sides (CEV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ?

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ Οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἤ διαμερισμόν)

Jesus is not asking the people in the crowd to tell him what they think. He is using the question form as a teaching tool. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words as a statement. Alternate translation: [Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth.]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ Οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἤ διαμερισμόν)

Jesus says the earth to mean the people living on the earth. Alternate translation: [Do you think that I came to make peace between people]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἰρήνην & δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ

peace & ˓to˒_give on the earth

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun peace with an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: [to make people get along with one another]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

οὐχί & ἀλλ’ ἢ διαμερισμόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ Οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἤ διαμερισμόν)

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. These words can be supplied from earlier in the sentence. Alternate translation: [No … I came to bring division instead]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

οὐχί & ἀλλ’ ἢ διαμερισμόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Δοκεῖτε ὅτι εἰρήνην παρεγενόμην δοῦναι ἐν τῇ γῇ Οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἤ διαμερισμόν)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun division with an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: [No … my coming will cause people to oppose each other]

λέγω ὑμῖν

˱I˲_˓am˒_saying ˱to˲_you_all

Jesus uses this expression to emphasize what he is about to tell his disciples and the crowd. Alternate translation: [I want you to understand]
