In the previous section Jesus told the crowd a parable to teach them not to be greedy. In this section he turned again to his disciples and taught them not to worry about the things they needed. Instead, they should think about the things that were important to God and share their possessions with the poor. God would provide what they needed.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
God’s Care For Those Who Trust In Him
Trust in God (GNT)
Do not Worry (NIV)
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 6:25–34.
For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Living/Life is more important/valuable than eating, and your(plur) body is more important than the clothes that you wear.
For your(plur) life has more importance/value than food and clothes.
For: In Greek, this verse begins with a conjunction that the BSB translates as For. The conjunction introduces a reason why Jesus’ disciples should not worry about food and clothes. Express this reason connection in a natural way in your language. In some languages a connector may not be needed.
life is more than food, and the body more than clothes: This clause indicates that a person’s life is more important than things like food and clothes that he needs. For example:
Life is much more important than food, and the body much more important than clothes. (GNT)
This statement is ambiguous. It can imply that:
Since God gives the disciples their lives (the more important thing), they can also trust him to supply the food and clothing (the less important things) that they need for their lives.
Life has much more meaning than food and clothes, and the disciples should focus on that meaning.
Jesus taught both these ideas in this chapter, and both ideas may be implied here. If possible, translate so that both ideas may be understood. In some languages it may be necessary to make this implied reasoning explicit, either in the text or in a footnote. For example:
Your life is more valuable than what you eat, and your body is more valuable than what you wear. Since God has given you both your life and your body, you can certainly trust him to also give you these things that you need.
In some languages it may be necessary to translate life as a verb. You could possibly translate food as a verb in order to match this and say something like:
For living involves so much more than eating
In some languages it may be more natural to combine the clauses of 12:23. As in 12:22c, it may not be necessary to mention “body” explicitly. For example:
For life is far more important than food and clothing.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
ἡ γὰρ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος
your (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἡ Γάρ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστίν τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)
Jesus leaves out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. Alternate translation: [Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing]
ἡ γὰρ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος
your (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἡ Γάρ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστίν τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)
This is a general statement of value. Alternate translation: [There is more to life than the food you eat, and there is more to the body than the clothing that you wear]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
