OET (OET-LV)For/Because all the nations of_the world are_seeking_after these things, but the father of_you_all has_known that you_all_are_needing of_these things.

OET (OET-RV)because people in every country in the world are looking for that, but your father already knows that you need those things.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:22–34: Jesus encouraged his disciples to trust God to care for them

In the previous section Jesus told the crowd a parable to teach them not to be greedy. In this section he turned again to his disciples and taught them not to worry about the things they needed. Instead, they should think about the things that were important to God and share their possessions with the poor. God would provide what they needed.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

God’s Care For Those Who Trust In Him

Trust in God (GNT)

Do not Worry (NIV)

There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 6:25–34.

12:30a

For the Gentiles of the world strive after all these things,

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces a reason why Jesus’ disciples should not worry about what they should eat and drink and wear. They should not worry, because if they worried, they would be like the people of other nations who did not know God.

the Gentiles of the world strive after all these things: Scholars disagree as to what the word all refers to:

  1. It refers to the phrase these things. For example:

These are all things that occupy the minds of the Gentiles (REB) (BSB, NIV, KJV, NASB, NRSV, REB, GNT, NJB)

  2. It refers to the phrase the Gentiles of the world. For example:

For all the nations of the world seek these things (RSV) (RSV, NET, NCV, NLT, GW)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). The word “all” appears with “these things” five other times in Luke. This interpretation also agrees with the parallel passage in Matthew 6:32.

the Gentiles of the world: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the Gentiles of the world is literally “the nations of the world.” It refers to the various people groups throughout the world who did not trust in the God of the Jews. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

people who don’t know God (CEV)

nations who do not worship/know God

other/Gentile nations

strive after: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as strive after means “desire” or “seek.” It has almost the same meaning as the verb that was translated as “be concerned about” in 12:29a and as “seek” in 12:31a. Other ways to translate the verb here are:

are always concerned about (GNT)

set their hearts on (NJB)

occupy the minds of (REB)

trying to get (NCV)

all these things: The phrase all these things refers to all sorts of material things, including the food, drink, and clothes that Jesus had just been talking about.

12:30b

and your Father knows that you need them.

and your Father knows that you need them: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as and is often translated as “but” in English. Here it occurs with your, which is in an emphatic position. It contrasts the disciples with the people who do not know God. The disciples can trust God to care for them. As their Father, he knows what they need. One way to express this meaning is:

But as for you, your Father knows that you need these things

your Father: This refers to God. If this would not be clear in your language, you may need to make this explicit:

your Father God

your heavenly Father

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τοῦ κόσμου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ταῦτα Γάρ παντᾶ τά ἔθνη τοῦ κόσμου ἐπιζητοῦσιν ὑμῶν δέ ὁ Πατήρ οἶδεν ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων)

The term nations means non-Jewish people groups. The term all is not a generalization for emphasis. Jesus is saying that this is the way of life for any group that does not know God. Alternate translation: [all the people groups who do not know God]

Note 2 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

ὑμῶν & ὁ Πατὴρ

˱of˲_you_all & the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ταῦτα Γάρ παντᾶ τά ἔθνη τοῦ κόσμου ἐπιζητοῦσιν ὑμῶν δέ ὁ Πατήρ οἶδεν ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων)

Father is an important title for God.

OET (OET-RV)because people in every country in the world are looking for that, but your father already knows that you need those things.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
