Section 19:11–27: Jesus told a parable about a king and his ten servants

Many of Jesus’ followers expected that when they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus would establish the kingdom of God and begin to reign as king. He told the parable in this section to help them understand that events would happen differently than they expected.

There are two main ideas that Jesus taught through this parable:

  1. Jesus, like the important man in the parable, was going away and would not return until after God made him king. In the meantime, the Jewish people would reject Jesus and God would punish them when he returned.

  2. While Jesus is gone, his disciples must serve him faithfully and use whatever he has given them to glorify him.

19:16a

The first servant came forward and said,

The first servant: The Greek term that the BSB translates as The first servant refers to the first servant to speak. It does not imply that he was the servant whom the master had hired first.

came forward and said: The verb that the BSB translates as came forward is literally “came.” It probably refers here to coming nearer to the king to speak to him. Another way to translate this is:

came and said (NIV)

In some languages there may be a special way to describe coming to a king or chief. For example:

came before him and said (NET)

19:16b

‘Master, your mina has produced ten more minas.’

Master: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Master here is the same word that is often translated as “Lord” or “Master.” In this context the servant used it to address his master, who was now the king. You should use a term that would be appropriate for a king’s servant to use to address him. For example:

In some languages it may not be natural to use a form of direct address for the king. If that is true in your language, you may refer to the king in the phrase that introduces the quote. For example:

said to the king, “Your mina…”

your mina has produced ten more minas: The phrase your mina refers to the money that the master had entrusted to this servant. The clause indicates that the servant had used the money to gain ten times as much money. Some other ways to translate this are:

the money that you entrusted to me has increased ten times

your one coin has gained/become ten coins

In some languages it may not be possible to speak of the money itself as earning more money. It may be necessary to make it clear that the servant had earned the money. For example:

Your one mina has made it possible for me to make ten more minas

I earned ten coins with the one you gave me (NCV)

In other languages there may be an idiom to express this. For example:

19:11-27 This parable has two main purposes: (1) to teach stewardship, the need to manage gifts and resources well while the king (Jesus) is away (cp. Matt 25:14-30); and (2) to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away upon Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem. Most Jews of Jesus’ day expected that when the Messiah came, God’s Kingdom would be established physically on earth, with Jerusalem at its center (see Isa 2:2-4; 35:1-10; 65:17-25; Jer 30–31; Ezek 37, 40-48; Mic 4:1-5).
