Many of Jesus’ followers expected that when they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus would establish the kingdom of God and begin to reign as king. He told the parable in this section to help them understand that events would happen differently than they expected.
There are two main ideas that Jesus taught through this parable:
Jesus, like the important man in the parable, was going away and would not return until after God made him king. In the meantime, the Jewish people would reject Jesus and God would punish them when he returned.
While Jesus is gone, his disciples must serve him faithfully and use whatever he has given them to glorify him.

After the king said that, he turned to his attendants/men and ordered them,
Then he told those standing by: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as those standing by refers to other people who were standing nearby as the king was talking to his servants. These people probably also served the king, since he gave them a command in 19:24b. A king usually had servants near him at all times. The text does not mention a specific category of servants. Some other ways to translate the phrase are:
some other servants standing there (CEV)
his attendants (NET)
his men (GW)
those who were standing there (GNT)
‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
‘Take(plur) the coin away from him and hand it to the servant who has ten coins.’
‘Take(plur) the money away from him and give it to the servant who used the money I gave him to gain ten times as much.’
Take the mina from him: In this clause the king told men to take the servant’s mina from him. The word mina refers to the valuable coin that the master had entrusted to his servant. It actually still belonged to the master. Here is another way to translate this:
Take the money from this servant (NLT)
and give it to the one who has ten minas: Here the king told the men to give the coin to the servant who earned ten coins (19:16). That servant would probably use it, along with the other ten coins, to make more money for the king.
In some languages it may be more natural to translate the command in this verse as indirect speech. For example:
24aThen he ordered his men 24bto take the coin away from that servant and give it to the servant who had ten coins.

The phrase the ones standing by refers to the king’s attendants, who would stand nearby him waiting to carry out any instructions that he gave. Alternate translation: [to his attendants]

19:11-27 This parable has two main purposes: (1) to teach stewardship, the need to manage gifts and resources well while the king (Jesus) is away (cp. Matt 25:14-30); and (2) to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away upon Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem. Most Jews of Jesus’ day expected that when the Messiah came, God’s Kingdom would be established physically on earth, with Jerusalem at its center (see Isa 2:2-4; 35:1-10; 65:17-25; Jer 30–31; Ezek 37, 40-48; Mic 4:1-5).
