OET (OET-LV) And Zaⱪarias said to the messenger:
By what ˓will˒_I_be_knowing this?
For/Because I am an_older_man, and the wife of_me having_advanced in the days of_her.
OET (OET-RV) Zechariah asked the messenger, “How will I know if this is true. Because I’m an older man and my wife is also getting old.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
κατὰ τί γνώσομαι τοῦτο
by what ˱I˲_˓will_be˒_knowing this
Zechariah is implicitly asking for a sign as proof. Alternate translation: [What sign can you show me to prove that this will happen]
Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
γάρ
for
The word For introduces the reason why Zechariah wants a sign. He and his wife are both too old to have children, so he is finding it hard to believe what the angel has told him.
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῆς
˓having˒_advanced in the days ˱of˲_her
Zechariah is using two idioms. As in [1:7](../01/07.md), to be advanced means to have aged, and days refers a particular period of time, in this case the lifetime of Elizabeth. Alternate translation: [my wife has also grown old]
OET (OET-LV) And Zaⱪarias said to the messenger:
By what ˓will˒_I_be_knowing this?
For/Because I am an_older_man, and the wife of_me having_advanced in the days of_her.
OET (OET-RV) Zechariah asked the messenger, “How will I know if this is true. Because I’m an older man and my wife is also getting old.”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
