OET (OET-LV)And it_was the_day of_preparation, and the_day_of_rest was_dawning.

OET (OET-RV) It was now the day of preparation and the Rest Day was about to begin.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-background

καὶ

and

Luke uses And to introduce background information that will help readers understand what happens next. Alternate translation: “Now”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἡμέρα ἦν παρασκευῆς

/the/_day ˱it˲_was ˱of˲_Preparation

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state explicitly what this Day was used in Preparation for. Alternate translation: “the day when people made preparations for the Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest, since they could not do any work then”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

Σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν

/the/_Sabbath /was/_dawning

For the Jews, the day began at sunset. But Luke speaks of this day dawning to mean that it was about to begin, even though this would happen at sunset rather than at sunrise. Alternate translation: “it was nearly sunset, when the Sabbath would begin”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

23:54 This was done late on Friday afternoon, the day of preparation: The Greek text does not explicitly refer to Friday, but simply to the day of preparation for the Sabbath of Passover week; the Sabbath began Friday evening.
• as the Sabbath was about to begin: The body had to be buried quickly, because the Jews could not work during the Sabbath, which began at sunset.
