SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:41–52: The boy Jesus spoke with the teachers

In this section, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to the Feast of the Passover in Jerusalem. This may have been Jesus’ first time to go there for Passover. While Jesus was in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple and discussed religious matters with Jewish religious leaders.

When Joseph and Mary left Jerusalem to return to Nazareth, they traveled with a group of people. They did not realize that Jesus had stayed in Jerusalem and was not traveling with them. This may have happened because of the way Jews normally walked in smaller groups when they traveled together. The women and small children walked ahead since they traveled more slowly. A boy normally traveled with his mother. But when he became a man, perhaps as early as twelve years old, he traveled with his father. So, as they returned from Jerusalem, Mary probably thought that Jesus was with Joseph, and Joseph may have thought that he was with Mary. Joseph and Mary traveled for a whole day before they realized that Jesus was not with them. The events in this section show three things:

  1. Joseph and Mary did not know where Jesus was;

  2. they did not know exactly what he was telling them when they found him;

  3. by the age of twelve (or before), Jesus was aware that he was God’s Son.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Mary and Joseph Find Jesus With the Teachers in the Temple Courtyard (GW)

Jesus when he was twelve years old

2:44a

Assuming He was in their company,

This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that is often translated as “but.” Some English versions, such as the ESV, translate it that way. The BSB has not translated this conjunction, and some other versions such as the NIV and GW also do not translate it. Connect 2:44a to 2:43c in a way that is natural in your language.

Assuming He was in their company: Joseph and Mary thought that Jesus was traveling with the same group of people that they were traveling with. See the introduction to Section 2:41–52 for more information about how this happened.

in their company: In some languages, the phrase in their company will suggest that Jesus was personally present with Joseph and Mary. This was not the case. To avoid this idea, you could translate the Greek word that the BSB translates as company as:

group

group of travelers

2:44b

they traveled on for a day

they traveled on for a day: The clause they traveled on for a day indicates that Joseph and Mary left Jerusalem and traveled until the end of that day. They probably camped with the other travelers somewhere near the road, or they may have stayed in a guesthouse. That is when they realized that Jesus was not with them.

2:44c

before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends.

relatives: The relatives probably included brothers and sisters of Joseph and Mary and the children of these brothers and sisters (Jesus’ cousins).

uW Translation Notes:

νομίσαντες δὲ

˓having˒_thought (Some words not found in SR-GNT: νομίσαντες Δέ αὐτόν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδόν καί ἀνεζήτουν αὐτόν ἐν τοῖς συγγενέσιν καί τοῖς γνωστοῖς)

Alternate translation: [But since they thought]

ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδὸν

˱they˲_came ˱of˲_˓a˒_day (Some words not found in SR-GNT: νομίσαντες Δέ αὐτόν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδόν καί ἀνεζήτουν αὐτόν ἐν τοῖς συγγενέσιν καί τοῖς γνωστοῖς)

Alternate translation: [they traveled as far as people walk in one day]

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential

καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: νομίσαντες Δέ αὐτόν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδόν καί ἀνεζήτουν αὐτόν ἐν τοῖς συγγενέσιν καί τοῖς γνωστοῖς)

The word translated and at the beginning of this phrase indicates that this event happened after the previous event that the story described. Alternate translation: [then they looked for him]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: νομίσαντες Δέ αὐτόν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδόν καί ἀνεζήτουν αὐτόν ἐν τοῖς συγγενέσιν καί τοῖς γνωστοῖς)

The implication is that Jesus’ parents looked for him among their friends and relatives once the whole group that was traveling together had stopped for the night. That way they could easily go around among everyone. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [and once the group had stopped for the night, then they looked for him]
