OET (OET-LV) But he answering said to them:
The_mother of_me and the_brothers of_me, these are the ones hearing and doing the message of_ the _god.
OET (OET-RV) “My mother and my brothers,” Yeshua responded, “are anyone who’s listening to God’s message and who put it into practice.”
In this section Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. However, they could not get to him because there were many other people around him. The theme of this section is similar to the theme of 8:4–18. In 8:4–18, the text emphasized that people should listen carefully to Jesus’ teaching. In this section, Jesus said that people who hear and obey God’s message are members of his family. They are as closely related to him as his own mother and brothers are.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
All who obey God are members of Jesus’ family
Jesus’ True Family (NET)
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers (GNT)
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 12:46–50 and Mark 3:31–35.
But He replied,
But he/Jesus answered by saying to them all,
He said,
But: This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that is often translated as “and.” Jesus’ reply was not what anyone expected, so the BSB and some other English versions (RSV, NJB) translate this conjunction as But. Other versions do not use a conjunction here (NIV, GNT). Connect this verse to 8:20 in a way that is natural in your language.
He replied: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as He replied is literally “He replying said to them.” This probably indicates that his reply was given to the messenger or messengers in 8:20a and for all the people in the crowd who were listening to him. Some ways to translate this are:
introduce Jesus’ answer in a general way. For example:
Jesus said
But he said in answer (NJB)
Make it clear that “them” refers to more than just the messenger or messengers. For example:
Jesus said to them all (GNT)
“My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”
“My mother and brothers are those who hear and obey the word/message from God.”
“People who listen to and follow what God says/commands are like my mother and brothers.”
My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out: Here Jesus used the phrase My mother and brothers in a figurative way. His statement means that people who listen to God’s word and obey it are like blood relatives to him. He considers them as his family. He did not imply here that all people who obey God’s word are literally from his physical family. You may want to make this clear in your translation. For example:
Those who hear the word and put it into practice are just like a mother and brothers to me.
The people that I call/consider my mother and my brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.
the word of God: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the word of God means God’s message, the message that comes/came from God. Translate this in a way that can include not only the written Scriptures, but also Jesus’ teaching.
carry it out: The Greek word that the BSB translates as carry it out is literally “doing.” It means “obey it” or “do what it says.”

ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς
he (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς Μήτηρ μού καί ἀδελφοί μού οὗτοι εἰσίν οἱ τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούοντες καί ποιοῦντες)
Together the two words answering and said mean that Jesus responded to the information that people gave him. Alternate translation: [But Jesus responded to them]

μήτηρ μου καὶ ἀδελφοί μου, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούοντες καὶ ποιοῦντες

Jesus means that people who believe and obey the message from God become like a family to one another. Alternate translation: [Those who hear the word of God and obey it are like a mother and brothers to me]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς Μήτηρ μού καί ἀδελφοί μού οὗτοι εἰσίν οἱ τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούοντες καί ποιοῦντες)
Jesus uses the term word to refer to the message from God that people share by using words. Alternate translation: [the message from God]
8:21 those who hear God’s word and obey it: Jesus was not rejecting his family but announcing that spiritual relationships—being part of God’s family—supersede family ties.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
