OET (OET-LV)And they_came_out to_see the thing having_become, and they_came to the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa), and found the man sitting, from whom the demons came_out, having_been_clothed and being_sensible before the feet of_ the _Yaʸsous, and they_were_afraid.

OET (OET-RV)So lots of people went there to the edge of the lake to see for themselves, and they found the man who’d been demon-possessed now dressed and sitting at Yeshua’s feet with his full faculties, and they were frightened.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:26–39: Jesus freed a man whom many demons controlled

After the storm in the preceding section, Jesus and his disciples arrived at the northeastern shore of Lake Galilee. Most of the people who lived in this region were Gentiles. A man who was controlled by many demons immediately came to Jesus. Jesus commanded the demons to leave the man. When they left, they went to control a large herd of pigs and destroyed them. When Jesus freed the man from these demons, he showed his great power over them.

“Uncleanness” is a theme in this story. The spirits that controlled the man were considered “unclean” (and called “unclean” in 8:29a). Tombs were “unclean.” Jews also considered pigs to be “unclean.”

When people saw that Jesus had caused the demons to leave the man and enter the pigs, they asked him to leave the area. Their response showed that even when people saw that Jesus was very powerful, sometimes they still would not believe in him or accept him as the Messiah.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus commanded many demons to leave a man

The deliverance of a man who was controlled by many demons

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 8:28–34 and Mark 5:1–20.

8:35a

So the people went out to see what had happened.

So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So here introduces what happened next as a result of what the herdsmen reported. Some English versions say “and” (NIV), while others (ESV) say “then.” Some versions (CEV, GW, NLT) do not use a conjunction. Connect 8:35a to 8:34 in a way that is natural in your language.

the people went out: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the people went out is literally “they went out.” It refers in general to the inhabitants of the city and countryside who heard the report of the herdsmen. In some languages it will be more natural to supply a subject such as “people” or “everyone,” as many English versions do.

went out to see what had happened: This phrase indicates that people left the places where they were in order to go and see what had happened. They wanted to see for themselves what the herdsmen had told them about. Compare 8:35c–d, which indicates that they arrived where Jesus was.

8:35b

They came to Jesus

They came to Jesus: This verse part begins with a Greek conjunction that many English versions, such as the ESV and NET, translate as “and.” Other versions, such as the NIV and CEV, translate it as as “when” to indicate the sequence of events. Some versions do not translate this conjunction. Translate this in a way that is natural in your language.

Some languages may need to state first that the people arrived at the place where Jesus was and then that they came to him. For example:

When they got to the place where Jesus was, they came to him

8:35c

and found the man whom the demons had left,

8:35d

sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind;

8:35c–d

found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind: In this context found the man indicates that they came to the place where the man was. It indicates especially that they noticed that he was sitting, clothed, and in his right mind. The word found does not imply that he was lost. Another way to translate this is:

saw/discovered that the man whom the demons had released was now sitting at Jesus’ feet, wearing clothes, and in his right mind

the man whom the demons had left: This phrase refers back to the man whom Jesus had released from the demons’ control. Refer to him in a natural way in your language. Some ways to do this are:

the man, whom the evil spirits had left (JBP)

the man (NCV)

the man who had been freed from the demons (NLT)

See the note on “a demon-possessed man” at 8:27b.

demons: This is the same word as 8:27b, 8:30c, and 8:33a.

sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind: Of the three things said about the man, probably the fact that he was in his right mind is the most important. Consider if it would be more natural in your language to place this first in the list rather than last. For example:

in his right mind, dressed, and sitting calmly at Jesus’ feet

sitting at Jesus’ feet: The man was sitting on the ground in front of Jesus. This was how people often sat in the presence of a teacher, and it implies a humble, submissive attitude. The people could see that the man was sitting quietly and peacefully. He was no longer wild and uncontrollable. Use a natural expression in your language to describe his position. Consider also if you have an expression that describes both the position and attitude of a learner with his teacher or master.

in his right mind: The phrase in his right mind indicates that the man’s mind was normal. He was no longer insane. In many languages this is expressed by an idiom. Other ways to say this are:

his mind was right/healed

his mind had returned

he was thinking/acting normally

8:35e

and they were afraid.

and they were afraid: Although the people were looking at the rescued man, they were afraid because of Jesus. This is made clear in 8:37a–b. When Jesus delivered the man from the demons, he showed that he had great supernatural power. This caused the people to fear him. Translate they were afraid with a natural expression that describes this type of “fear” or “dread” in your language. See how you translated the similar words and emotion at 8:25a.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐξῆλθον

˱they˲_came_out

Here, as well as in the other two instances in this verse, they refers to the people of that region, as in [8:37](../08/37.md). The term went out indicates the remote area where the man had been living. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express those things explicitly. Alternate translation: [people from all over that region went out to that remote area]

εὗραν & τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἀφ’ οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐξῆλθεν

Alternate translation: [saw the man whom the demons had left]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [wearing clothes]

σωφρονοῦντα

being_sensible

Alternate translation: [behaving normally]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

καθήμενον & παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

sitting & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐξῆλθον Δέ ἰδεῖν τό γεγονός καί ἦλθον πρός τόν Ἰησοῦν καί εὗρον καθήμενον τόν ἄνθρωπον ἀφʼ οὗ τά δαιμόνια ἐξῆλθεν ἱματισμένον καί σωφρονοῦντα παρά τούς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καί ἐφοβήθησαν)

This is an idiom. Alternate translation: [sitting on the ground in front of Jesus]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐφοβήθησαν

˱they˲_˓were˒_afraid

The implication is that they were afraid of what else such a powerful person as Jesus might do. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [they were afraid of what else Jesus might do, since they recognized what great power he had]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:35 sitting at Jesus’ feet: The man sat in the position of a disciple, indicating his willingness to follow Jesus (see 8:37).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
