OET (OET-LV)And it_was_reported to_him:
The mother of_you and the brothers of_you, have_stood outside wanting to_see you.

OET (OET-RV)Your mother and brothers are standing outside,” someone told him, “and they want to see you.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:19–21: Jesus said that people who obey God’s word are his real family

In this section Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. However, they could not get to him because there were many other people around him. The theme of this section is similar to the theme of 8:4–18. In 8:4–18, the text emphasized that people should listen carefully to Jesus’ teaching. In this section, Jesus said that people who hear and obey God’s message are members of his family. They are as closely related to him as his own mother and brothers are.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

All who obey God are members of Jesus’ family

Jesus’ True Family (NET)

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers (GNT)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 12:46–50 and Mark 3:31–35.

8:20a

He was told,

He was told: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as He was told is literally “it was reported to him” (as in the NASB). The text does not tell who said this to Jesus.Matthew gives this as one man (Matthew 12:47) while Mark uses a plural verb (Mark 3:32). Other ways to say this are:

Someone brought him the message that

the message/report came to him

Jesus was told

8:20b

“Your mother and brothers are standing outside,

standing outside: The context implies that Jesus had been teaching outside, not in a house. If this is true, the phrase standing outside indicates that his mother and brothers were on the outskirts of the crowd around Jesus.See Lenski. The alternative position is that this refers to “outside of the house” as mentioned in Mark 3:20 and 3:31. It may be that εξω used as an adverb (as opposed to as a preposition with specified object) and with no specific mention of place means “outside, out-of-doors” and so carried the implication that Jesus was inside (see Marshall on 8:20). You could make this explicit in your language if you need to. For example:

standing on the edge of the crowd

8:20c

wanting to see You.”

wanting to see You: This phrase explains the reason why Jesus’ mother and brothers had come to where he was. Express this reason in a natural way in your language. One way to translate it in English is:

because they want to see you

General Comment on 8:20a–c

If your language prefers indirect speech, you could say:

Jesus heard that his mother and brothers were standing outside wanting to see him.

In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of some information in this verse. For example:

20aSomeone told Jesus, 20b“Your mother and brothers 20care here to see you, 20band they are standing on the edge of the crowd.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀπηγγέλη & αὐτῷ

˱it˲_˓was˒_reported & ˱to˲_him

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. The subject should be plural, since in the next verse Jesus responds to “them.” Alternate translation: [people told him]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / you

σου & σου & σε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀπηγγέλη Δέ αὐτῷ Ἡ μήτηρ σοῦ καί οἱ ἀδελφοί σοῦ ἑστήκασιν ἔξω ἰδεῖν θέλοντες σέ)

Since the person who said this was speaking to Jesus alone, your and you are singular.

ἰδεῖν θέλοντές σε

˓to˒_see (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀπηγγέλη Δέ αὐτῷ Ἡ μήτηρ σοῦ καί οἱ ἀδελφοί σοῦ ἑστήκασιν ἔξω ἰδεῖν θέλοντες σέ)

Alternate translation: [and they would like to see you]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:19-20 Jesus had four brothers—James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon—and an unknown number of sisters (Matt 13:55; Mark 6:3). These children were probably born to Joseph and Mary after Jesus’ virginal conception and birth. (On the other hand, some believe that Mary remained a lifelong virgin and that Joseph was therefore a widower with children from a previous marriage when he married Mary.)
