This section tells about two miracles that Jesus did. He healed a woman who had a sickness that caused her to have chronic menstrual bleeding. The story about this woman is told in the middle of the story about a dead girl whom Jesus caused to live again. The situation was hopeless for both until Jesus miraculously helped them. His miracles showed the special power and authority that God had given to him as the Messiah.
These stories include the concept of uncleanness, just as in the story of the healing of the man with a “legion” of unclean spirits. Here, the woman was unclean according to the law of Moses because of the bleeding that was caused by her sickness. The dead body of Jairus’ daughter was also ritually unclean. But in spite of this, Jesus touched both of them. Jesus did not become unclean himself when he touched them. Instead, he made them ritually clean by making them well.
Another important theme in this section is faith. Jesus said that the woman who was bleeding was healed because she believed that Jesus could heal her. Then he encouraged Jairus to keep believing that God could make his daughter well, even after she had died.
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus cured a woman with chronic bleeding and gave life to a dead girl
The child of Jairus and the woman who touched the border/edge of Jesus’ clothing
A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman (NIV)
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:18–26 and Mark 5:21–43.
“Who touched Me?” Jesus asked.
¶ Jesus asked, “Who touched me?”
¶ Jesus said, “Someone touched me. Who was it?”
“Who touched Me?” Jesus asked: The BSB has placed the phrase Jesus asked after the quotation. In the Greek text, it comes before the speech begins. Place it where it is most natural in your language.
Jesus asked: The text does not indicate to whom Jesus spoke when he asked who touched him. It is likely that he spoke to the people who were near him in the crowd. He wanted the person who touched him to respond. In some languages you may need to indicate to whom Jesus was speaking: For example:
Jesus asked those near him
Jesus asked the crowd behind him
But they all denied it.
When they all said that they had not touched him,
All the people around/near him said, “I am not the one who touched you.”
they all denied it: The Greek word that the BSB translates as they all refers to the various people around Jesus who heard his question.
In some languages, it may be natural to use direct speech here. For example:
Everyone around him said, “I did not touch you.”
All the people near him denied it, saying, “I am not the one.”
“Master,” said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.”
Peter said, “Master, a crowd of people surrounds you and presses against you.” It seems very strange that you should ask, “Who touched me?”
Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, many people are touching you, because the crowd is encircling and pressing against you.”
“Master,” said Peter: There is a textual issue here. Some Greek manuscripts have only “Peter.” Other manuscripts have “Peter and those with him.” The KJV follows the manuscripts that have “Peter and those with him.” It is recommended that you follow the BSB and the majority of English versions that have only “Peter.” However, if the national language version has “Peter and those with him,” it is recommended that you mention this in a footnote. For example: Some Greek manuscripts and [the national language version] have “Peter and those with him.” The Greek word that the BSB translates as Master is a term that shows respect. Peter used it to address Jesus as a person who had high status.The Greek word here is Ἐπιστάτα. See the note at 5:5a where the same term is used.
the people are crowding and pressing against You: There is a textual issue here. Some Greek manuscripts add the words “and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” The KJV follows the manuscripts that include these words. It is recommended that you follow the BSB and the majority of English versions, which do not include these words. However, if the national language version includes these words, it is recommended that you mention this in a footnote. For example: “Some Greek manuscripts and [the national language version] add the words ‘and you say, “Who touched me?”’” By saying the people are crowding and pressing against You, Peter implied that many people had touched Jesus. He indicated that he did not understand why Jesus asked the question “Who touched me?” See Mark 5:31, which expresses this same lack of understanding with the question “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
It may be necessary or helpful to make some of this explicit in your language. For example:
…the people are crowding and pressing against you so that many people are touching you.
…so many people are crowding and pressing against you that I do not understand how you can ask “Who touched me?”
the people: The phrase that the BSB translates as the people is literally “the crowds.” See the note on “the crowds” at 8:42c.
are crowding and pressing against You: The two Greek verbs that the BSB translates as are crowding and are…pressing against are similar in meaning. The first one means “to surround or encircle.” The second means “to press against or squeeze.” Some languages may have one word or expression that combines these ideas. Some other ways to translate the clause are:
people are crowding all around and pushing you from every side (CEV)
this whole crowd is pressing up against you (NLT)

By saying this, Peter was implying that anyone could have touched Jesus. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [there are many people crowding around you and pressing in against you, so any one of them might have touched you]

These two expressions mean similar things. Peter is using repetition for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could combine these phrases. Alternate translation: [pressing against you from every side]
