SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–22: Second lesson: Wisdom will spare you from the dangers of crime and adultery

Here is a summary of the advice in this section: If you accept what I teach and seek to become wise (2:1–4), you will indeed become wise, and because of your wisdom, you will know how to revere the LORD and how to do what is right. You will also be protected (2:5–11). Wisdom will protect you from wicked men (2:12–15) and from adulterous women (2:16–19). Consequently, you will follow a righteous lifestyle and enjoy a long life in your own land, but the wicked will be forced to leave their land (2:20–22).

Some other headings for this section are:

The Benefits of Wisdom (NLT)

The Rewards of Wisdom (GNT)

The rewards/benefits that wisdom gives to people

Paragraph 2:9–11

Some versions such as the BSB start a new paragraph at 2:9 to indicate the second result of desiring wisdom.2.9 Also see the NIV and the GNT. You will need to decide whether it is better in your language to start a new paragraph here or to continue the same paragraph, as in the RSV and NJB.

2:10

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

10aFor wisdom will enter your heart,

10band knowledge will delight your soul.

2:10a–b

For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will delight your soul: This verse explains why the person who searches for wisdom will know how to do what is right. It is because he will indeed become wise. This wisdom/knowledge will also give him great joy. Some English versions, such as the BSB, introduce this explanation with the word For. For example:

for wisdom will sink into your mind (REB)

Other versions leave this connection implied. For example:

Wisdom will control your mind (CEV)

Introduce this explanation in a natural way in your language.

See wisdom and knowledge in the Glossary for more information on these words.

2:10a

For wisdom will enter your heart,

wisdom will enter your heart: For heart, see the note on 2:2a–b. The heart represents the center of a person’s inner life. It is a figure of speech (synecdoche) that represents the whole person. For wisdom to enter a person’s heart is equivalent to a person becoming wise. For example:

You will become wise (GNT)

2:10b

and knowledge will delight your soul.

knowledge will delight your soul: The word knowledge here has essentially the same meaning as “wisdom.” The word soul, like the word “heart,” is a figure of speech (synecdoche) that represents the whole person. The word that the BSB translates as delight means “pleasing” or “attractive.” Other ways to translate this clause are:

knowledge will be pleasing to you (NCV)

your knowledge will give you pleasure (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

חָכְמָ֣ה & וְ֝דַ֗עַת

wisdom & and,knowledge

See how you translated wisdom in [1:2](../01/02.md) and knowledge in [1:4](../01/04.md).

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

תָב֣וֹא & בְלִבֶּ֑ךָ

enter & in,heart_of,your

This phrase is an idiom that refers to fully knowing something. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use an idiom from your language that does have this meaning or state the meaning plainly. See how you translated the same use of heart in [2:2](../02/02.md). Alternate translation: “will be fully in your mind” or “will become a part of you” or “will be the way that you think”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

לְֽנַפְשְׁךָ֥ יִנְעָֽם

to,self_of,your pleasant

Here, soul refers to the whole person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “will be pleasant to you”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:10 Wisdom will enter your heart, becoming an integral part of life. Rather than occasionally doing wise things, the wise person consistently makes wise choices.
• Knowledge brings joy because it helps people live successfully.
