OET (OET-RV)That’s because Yahweh gives wisdom
⇔ knowledge and understanding come from his mouth

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–22: Second lesson: Wisdom will spare you from the dangers of crime and adultery

Here is a summary of the advice in this section: If you accept what I teach and seek to become wise (2:1–4), you will indeed become wise, and because of your wisdom, you will know how to revere the LORD and how to do what is right. You will also be protected (2:5–11). Wisdom will protect you from wicked men (2:12–15) and from adulterous women (2:16–19). Consequently, you will follow a righteous lifestyle and enjoy a long life in your own land, but the wicked will be forced to leave their land (2:20–22).

Some other headings for this section are:

The Benefits of Wisdom (NLT)

The Rewards of Wisdom (GNT)

The rewards/benefits that wisdom gives to people

Paragraph 2:5–8

This paragraph introduces some of the results that come from fulfilling the conditions of 2:1–4. See the note on Paragraph 2:1–4 for ways to introduce 2:5.

2:6

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

6aFor the LORD gives wisdom,

6band from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

2:6a

For the LORD gives wisdom;

For: In Hebrew, this word introduces the explanation or reason (in 2:6–8) why the if-then argument in 2:1–5 is valid. The reason a person who searches for wisdom will come to know the LORD is that the LORD is the only source of wisdom.

In some languages, it may be more natural to introduce this explanation without using an explicit word. See the examples in the next note. Introduce this explanation in a natural way in your language.

the LORD gives wisdom: By placing the name the LORD at the beginning of this sentence, instead of its usual position following the verb in Hebrew, the author makes the LORD prominent. This stresses that he alone is the source of wisdom. Some other ways to express this meaning are:

Only the Lord gives wisdom (NCV)

It is the Lord who gives wisdom (GNT)

wisdom: See wisdom in the Glossary.

2:6a–b

(combined/reordered)

2:6b

from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

from His mouth come knowledge and understanding: The phrase from His mouth is a figure of speech (synecdoche). In this context, it means “from him.” It indicates that the LORD is the one who gives people the knowledge and understanding that they have. In some languages, it may be clearer to translate the meaning without using the figure of speech. For example:

from him come knowledge and understanding (GNT)

he gives knowledge and understanding (NCV)

knowledge and understanding: The word knowledge has essentially the same meaning here as “wisdom.” It refers both to knowing a lot of information and to being skilled in living.

For understanding, see the note on 2:2b. See knowledge and understanding (good sense) in the Glossary.

General Comment on 2:6a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. For example:

For the LORD alone is the one who gives wisdom and discernment to people.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּֽי

that/for/because/then/when

For here indicates that what follows is the reason why what Solomon stated in [2:1–4](../02/01.md) is true. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: “This is due to the fact that”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

חָכְמָ֑ה & דַּ֣עַת וּתְבוּנָֽה

wisdom & knowledge and,understanding

See how you translated wisdom in [1:2](../01/02.md) and knowledge and understanding in the previous verse.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

מִ֝פִּ֗יו דַּ֣עַת וּתְבוּנָֽה

[are]_from,mouth_of,his knowledge and,understanding

Here, mouth represents Yahweh himself or what he says. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “from Yahweh comes knowledge and understanding”
