OET (OET-RV) Discretion will watch over you.
⇔ ≈ Understanding will guard you
Here is a summary of the advice in this section: If you accept what I teach and seek to become wise (2:1–4), you will indeed become wise, and because of your wisdom, you will know how to revere the LORD and how to do what is right. You will also be protected (2:5–11). Wisdom will protect you from wicked men (2:12–15) and from adulterous women (2:16–19). Consequently, you will follow a righteous lifestyle and enjoy a long life in your own land, but the wicked will be forced to leave their land (2:20–22).
Some other headings for this section are:
The Benefits of Wisdom (NLT)
The Rewards of Wisdom (GNT)
The rewards/benefits that wisdom gives to people
Some versions such as the BSB start a new paragraph at 2:9 to indicate the second result of desiring wisdom.2.9 Also see the NIV and the GNT. You will need to decide whether it is better in your language to start a new paragraph here or to continue the same paragraph, as in the RSV and NJB.
Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:
11a Discretion will watch over you,
11band understanding will guard you
(combined/reordered)
In addition, your(sing) ability to think carefully and make good plans will protect/keep you from doing wrong.
Discretion will watch over you, and understanding will guard you: An additional benefit of becoming wise is that a person will have the Discretion and understanding to protect him from the evil influences described in the following verses. Discretion (Hebrew: mǝzimmah) is the ability to think through a situation and make good plans (see the note on 1:4b). The word understanding (Hebrew: tǝbunah) is practical good sense (see the note on 2:2b).
See discretion and understanding (good sense) in the Glossary.
In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts, as the CEV has done:
Sound judgment and good sense will watch over you. (CEV)
Discretion will watch over you,
An additional benefit is that your(sing) ability to plan wisely will protect you,
and understanding will guard you,
your(sing) good sense will keep you from doing evil.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
מְ֭זִמָּה תִּשְׁמֹ֥ר עָלֶ֗יךָ תְּבוּנָ֥ה תִנְצְרֶֽכָּה
discretion watch over,you understanding it,will_preserve_you
These two clauses mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the clauses with a word that shows that the second clause is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: “Discretion will watch over you, yes, understanding will protect you”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
מְ֭זִמָּה תִּשְׁמֹ֥ר עָלֶ֗יךָ תְּבוּנָ֥ה תִנְצְרֶֽכָּה
discretion watch over,you understanding it,will_preserve_you
Here Solomon speaks of discretion and understanding as if they were people who could protect and guard someone else. He means that someone who has discretion and understanding will be safe. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “If you have discretion, you will be safe; if you have understanding, you will be secure”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
מְ֭זִמָּה & תְּבוּנָ֥ה
discretion & understanding
See how you translated Discretion in [1:4](../01/04.md) and understanding in [1:2](../01/02.md).
2:1-22 The father urges his son to seek wisdom. It will protect him from evil men and from the dangers of promiscuous women. The son must seek wisdom, while understanding that it is a gift from God.
OET (OET-RV) Discretion will watch over you.
⇔ ≈ Understanding will guard you
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
