Section 5:1–23: Eighth lesson: Avoid the temptation to commit adultery

A summary of this lesson is: Stay away from a woman who commits adultery, or you will bitterly regret it (5:1–14). Instead, be delighted with your own wife (5:15–20), because the LORD sees everything you do and will punish wickedness (5:21–23).

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning. In both lines the underlined parts express the result of the young man’s sin.

5:23a–b

Since he foolishly refuses to do what is right and does not control himself, he will get lost and die.

He dies for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly: Since going astray logically precedes dying, the relationship between the parallel parts of this verse may be expressed as follows: The wicked person’s great folly and lack of discipline cause him to be led astray, and he dies.

5:23a

He dies for lack of discipline,

His lack of self-control will result in his death.
He will die because he does not control himself.

lack of discipline: The usual meaning of discipline (Hebrew: musar) is moral instruction or training. Here, the word probably refers to the result of such training—self-control. So in this context, the phrase that the BSB translates as lack of discipline refers to the absence of self-control. For example:

They die because they have no self-control (GNT)

He will die because he does not control himself (NCV)

5:23b

led astray by his own great folly.

Yes, he will get lost and die because he is extremely foolish.
His great foolishness will cause him to go astray and die.

led astray by his own great folly: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates here as led astray was translated as “captivated” in 5:19–20. Here in 5:23b, it has the sense of going astray from the safe or right path.Fox (page 205), Waltke (page 324). Another way to translate this phrase is:

Because he is very foolish, he will wander off the right path and get lost.

folly: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as folly means moral foolishness. It refers to the inability or refusal to do what is right or to avoid what is wrong. It is not mental stupidity. See folly in the Glossary.

General Comment on 5:23a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to reorder these two lines. For example:

^23bHis extreme moral foolishness will cause him to stray from the right path.

^23aHis absence of self-control will result in his death.

Although the terms He and his are masculine, Solomon is using these words in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Here Solomon speaks of a person behaving in a sinful manner that will cause him to die as if he were staggering like an intoxicated person who gets lost. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “he loses his way” or “he behaves recklessly”
