OET (OET-LV)Make_far_away from_with_her way_of_your and_do_not draw_near to the_entrance_of her_house_of_her.

OET (OET-RV)Stay far away from her,
⇔ ≈ and don’t go near the entrance to her house,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–23: Eighth lesson: Avoid the temptation to commit adultery

A summary of this lesson is: Stay away from a woman who commits adultery, or you will bitterly regret it (5:1–14). Instead, be delighted with your own wife (5:15–20), because the LORD sees everything you do and will punish wickedness (5:21–23).

Some other headings for this section are:

Advice to stay away from a woman who commits adultery

Warning About Adultery (NCV)

Avoid Adultery (GW)

Be Faithful to Your Wife (CEV)

Paragraph 5:7–14

Verses 5:9–14 tell what will happen to the son if he does not follow the advice given in 5:7–8.

5:8

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning. The first command tells the son what he should do. The parallel command tells him what he should not do.

8a Keep your path far from her;

8b do not go near the door of her house,

5:8b

do not go near the door of her house,

5:8a–b

Keep your path far from her; do not go near the door of her house: The meaning of both of these parallel commands is to stay as far away from an immoral woman as possible. As is common in Hebrew parallelism, the first line speaks in general about staying on a path that is far from the woman. The second line gives a specific location that the son should avoid—the door of her house.

5:8a

Keep your path far from her;

Keep your path far from her: In Hebrew, this command is more literally “Make far away from her your way.” Some versions keep the figure of traveling on a “path” or “way.” For example:

set your course as far from her as possible (NJB)

Other versions translate the meaning without the figure of speech. For example:

Stay away from such a woman. (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הַרְחֵ֣ק מֵעָלֶ֣יהָ דַרְכֶּ֑ךָ

keep_~_far from,with,her way_of,your

Here, way represents the person and the person's daily activities. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Keep yourself far away from her”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

מֵעָלֶ֣יהָ & בֵּיתָֽהּ

from,with,her & her_house_of,her

In this verse, her refers to the adulterous woman described in [5:3–6](../05/03.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “from an adulteress … the house of an adulteress”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / go

וְאַל־תִּ֝קְרַ֗ב

and,do_not go_near

In a context such as this, your language might say “go” instead of come. Alternate translation: “and do not go near”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:1-23 These instructions on embracing one’s wife and avoiding immoral women were originally addressed to young men just beginning their professional careers (see also 2:16-22; 7:1-27). This topic is also popular in ancient Egyptian wisdom writing.
