SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–23: Eighth lesson: Avoid the temptation to commit adultery

A summary of this lesson is: Stay away from a woman who commits adultery, or you will bitterly regret it (5:1–14). Instead, be delighted with your own wife (5:15–20), because the LORD sees everything you do and will punish wickedness (5:21–23).

Some other headings for this section are:

Advice to stay away from a woman who commits adultery

Warning About Adultery (NCV)

Avoid Adultery (GW)

Be Faithful to Your Wife (CEV)

Paragraph 5:1–6

In this paragraph, the father urges the son to pay attention to his wise words (5:1) so that he will always be cautious and sensible in what he does and says (5:2). The reason for this caution is that it will enable him to resist the tempting invitation of the adulteress whose path leads straight to death (5:3–6).

5:6

There is a contrast in this verse between the parts in bold print. The underlined parts do not contrast.

6a She does not consider the path of life;

6b she does not know that her ways are unstable.

5:6a

She does not consider the path of life;

She does not consider the path of life: This clause indicates that the woman has decided to avoid the path that leads to life.See Fox (pages 192–193), Delitzsch (page 87), Waltke (page 310), and the NET footnote. Other ways to translate this clause are:

she does not care about the path to life (NLT96)

far from following the path of life (NJB)

She doesn’t even think about the path of life. (GW)

The GNT translates this clause as, “She does not stay on the road to life,” but this may incorrectly imply that at certain times she does follow the road leading to life. That is not implied in this context.

path of life: This phrase means “way that leads to life.” For more information, see the note on 2:19a–b.

5:6b

she does not know that her ways are unstable.

she does not know that her ways are unstable: In Hebrew, the clause her ways are unstable is literally “her ways wander/waver.” This expression indicates that her life is unstable.See the NET footnote, also Toy (page 106). Her behavior is like a path that keeps turning in different directions.

she does not know: She does not realize that her life is unstable and that she is wandering.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֹ֣רַח חַ֭יִּים פֶּן־תְּפַלֵּ֑ס

path_of life(pl) lest ponder

Lest here implies that the adulterous woman has an aversion to the path of life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “She refuses to observe the path of life”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֹ֣רַח חַ֭יִּים פֶּן־תְּפַלֵּ֑ס

path_of life(pl) lest ponder

Here Solomon speaks of behavior that results in living a good life as if it were a path that leads to life and can be observed. If it would be helpful for your readers, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Lest she care about behavior that leads to life”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

מַ֝עְגְּלֹתֶ֗יהָ

tracks_of,her

See how you translated the same use of tracks in [2:15](../02/15.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:1-23 These instructions on embracing one’s wife and avoiding immoral women were originally addressed to young men just beginning their professional careers (see also 2:16-22; 7:1-27). This topic is also popular in ancient Egyptian wisdom writing.
