OET (OET-LV)For/Because as you_all once disbelieved the in_god, but now you_all_were_shown_mercy by_the of_these disbelief,

OET (OET-RV)You non-Jews didn’t originally believe in God, but now you’ve all been shown mercy because of the disbelief of these Jews.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:25–32: God will be merciful to Jews and Gentiles

In this section, Paul warned the Gentile believers in Rome to not think of themselves as better than the Jews who have not believed in Jesus. God has caused many Jews to not believe until the time the full number of Gentiles will believe. Then all Israel will be saved.

Many Jews have rejected the gospel of Jesus, but God still loves them because he chose them long ago. God will not change his mind about his promises to them and his calling of them.

Both Jew and Gentile are alike in that both have been disobedient and God will be merciful to both.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God still has a plan for Israel (JBP)

All Israel Will Be Saved (NIV)

11:30a

Just as you who formerly disobeyed God

Just as: This word introduces an explanation here.Moo (page 732) and Cranfield (page 582).

you: Here this word refers to Gentile believers in Rome, and implies all Gentile believers. In the Greek, the word is emphatic. For example:

you yourselves

who formerly: Here this phrase refers to the time before the readers of this letter believed in Jesus.

11:30b

have now received mercy through their disobedience,

have: The “just as” comparison continues from 11:30a. In English, to help indicate that, no comma is used at the end of 11:30a.

But in some languages a pause would be more natural here. For example:

Just as formerly you were disobedient to God, but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, (REB)

now: Here this word refers generally to this new period of time where the gospel of Jesus is proclaimed.

received mercy: The word “you” is implied from 11:30a. This clause indicates that God was merciful to the Gentile believers. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

you have been shown mercy (NJB)

This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God was merciful to you (NLT)

their: Here, as in 11:28b, this word refers to the Jews who do not believe in Jesus.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥσπερ Γάρ ὑμεῖς ποτέ ἠπειθήσατε τῷ Θεῷ νῦν δέ ἠλεήθητε τῇ τούτων ἀπειθείᾳ)

For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. Here, For indicates that what follows in this verse and the next verse explains what Paul said about the Jews in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [In fact,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

ὑμεῖς ποτε ἠπειθήσατε

you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥσπερ Γάρ ὑμεῖς ποτέ ἠπειθήσατε τῷ Θεῷ νῦν δέ ἠλεήθητε τῇ τούτων ἀπειθείᾳ)

Here, you and yourselves are plural and refer to non-Jewish Christians, as in verses [11:17–24](../11/17.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [you non-Jewish believers in Christ yourselves were formerly disobedient]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἠλεήθητε

˱you_all˲_˓were˒_shown_mercy

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God has shown mercy]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἠλεήθητε τῇ τούτων ἀπειθείᾳ

˱you_all˲_˓were˒_shown_mercy ˱by˲_the ˱of˲_these disbelief

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of mercy and disobedience, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [were shown how merciful God is in how disobedient these were]

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

τῇ τούτων ἀπειθείᾳ

˱by˲_the ˱of˲_these disbelief

Here, in indicates that what follows is one reason why God showed mercy to non-Jewish people. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [due to the disobedience of these]

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

τούτων

˱of˲_these

Here, these refers to Jewish people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [of these Jews]
