OET (OET-LV)For/Because not I_am_wanting you_all to_be_not_knowing, brothers, the mystery this, in_order_that not you_all_may_be in yourselves prudent, that a_hardening in part to_ the _Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl) has_become, until of_which the fullness of_the pagans may_come_in,

OET (OET-RV)Brothers and sisters, I don’t want you all be to ignorant of this mystery so that you won’t end up becoming proud: There’s a partial hardening coming to the Jews until the fullness of the non-Jews comes to pass

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:25–32: God will be merciful to Jews and Gentiles

In this section, Paul warned the Gentile believers in Rome to not think of themselves as better than the Jews who have not believed in Jesus. God has caused many Jews to not believe until the time the full number of Gentiles will believe. Then all Israel will be saved.

Many Jews have rejected the gospel of Jesus, but God still loves them because he chose them long ago. God will not change his mind about his promises to them and his calling of them.

Both Jew and Gentile are alike in that both have been disobedient and God will be merciful to both.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God still has a plan for Israel (JBP)

All Israel Will Be Saved (NIV)

11:25a

I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not be conceited:

This verse begins with the Greek word that is usually translated “for.” It introduces something more that Paul wanted to say about Israel connected to what he has been saying in 11:1–24. For example:

For (KJV)

Now (JBP)

Furthermore

I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not be conceited: The word brothers occurs in the middle of the main clause. In many languages it is more natural to have this word first in the clause. For example:

Brothers, lest you be conceited, I want you to understand this mystery,

I do not want you to be ignorant: The Greek phrase that the BSB literally translates as I do not want you to be ignorant emphasizes what he was about to say. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

I do not want you to be unaware

my desire is that you know

See how you translated this in 1:13.

this mystery: This phrase refers to the words of 11:25b–26a.

mystery: The Greek word that the BSB translates as mystery refers to truth or knowledge that people have not discovered on their own. Someone else reveals it to them. God revealed to Paul what he wrote in 11:25b–26a. Here are other ways to translate this word:

secret (NCV)

hidden truth

something that was not made-known previouslyKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

brothers: Here this word refers to believers in Jesus, both men and women. The word indicates a close relationship between believers because God has made them his (adopted) children. It does not refer here to his fellow Israelites who did not believe in Jesus, as in 9:3. See how you translated this word in 1:13 or 10:1.

so that you will not be conceited: The Greek is more literally “in-order-that you might not be wise in yourselves.” This clause is a warning to the Gentile believers in Rome not to think of themselves as wise. In this letter, Paul encouraged them, that they were like branches that God had grafted into the holy tree and that Jews who have not believed in Jesus have been broken away. But here he warned them not to think that God had favored them rather than the Jews, and therefore they were wiser than the Jews. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

so that you will not be wise in your own estimation (NASB)

to keep you from thinking yourselves wise (REB)

11:25b

A hardening in part has come to Israel,

A hardening in part has come to Israel: The Greek is more literally “hardness in part has happened in/to Israel.” It indicates that some Jews do not believe in Jesus, and implies that God caused that to happen. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

a hardening has come upon part of Israel (RSV)

part of Israel had its mind hardened (NJB)

the hearts of some of the Israelites have been made hard/stubborn

God has caused the insides/mind of some of the people of Israel to be hard/unyielding

hardening: Here this word means “stubbornness.” It refers to someone unwilling to accept something as the truth or having difficulty understanding something. Here are other ways to translate this word:

made stubborn (NCV)

making their minds closed

See how you translated “hardened” in 11:7.

in part: Here this word indicates that only some Jews were hardened. It does not indicate that all Jews were hardened a little.See Morris (page 420) or Cranfield (page 575). See the above examples.

Israel: This is the name for the Jews as a nation. It is God’s name for them in connection with his covenant with them.

11:25c

until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

until the full number of the Gentiles has come in: This clause describes the extent of time Paul was talking about. The hardening of Israel in part takes place during that time period.

the full number of the Gentiles has come in: The Greek word that the BSB translates as full number means “a full measure” of something. Here the whole clause probably refers to the number of Gentiles that God has decided to bring into his kingdom. When that number is reached, the partial hardening of Israel will end. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

the fullness of the Gentiles has come in (ESV)

until all of God’s non-Jewish people are included (GW)

until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ (NLT)

the Gentiles: Here this word refers to all people-groups except the Jews. See how you translated this in 11:12.

has come in: Here these words have a figurative meaning. It implies entering the kingdom of God. See the examples above.

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί τό μυστήριον τοῦτο ἵνα μή ἦτε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπό μέρους τῷ Ἰσραήλ γέγονεν ἄχρις οὗ τό πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ)

For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. Here, For indicates that what Paul says in [11:25–32](../11/25.md) is the reason why he said what he did in the previous verse. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [I am telling you these things because]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐ & θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί τό μυστήριον τοῦτο ἵνα μή ἦτε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπό μέρους τῷ Ἰσραήλ γέγονεν ἄχρις οὗ τό πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ)

If your readers would misunderstand this double negative, you could translate it as a positive statement. Alternate translation: [I very much want you to be aware]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

οὐ & θέλω

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί τό μυστήριον τοῦτο ἵνα μή ἦτε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπό μέρους τῷ Ἰσραήλ γέγονεν ἄχρις οὗ τό πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ)

The pronoun I here refers to Paul. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [I, Paul, do not want]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

ὑμᾶς & μὴ ἦτε παρ’ ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι

you_all & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί τό μυστήριον τοῦτο ἵνα μή ἦτε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπό μέρους τῷ Ἰσραήλ γέγονεν ἄχρις οὗ τό πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ)

Here, you and yourselves are plural and could refer to: (1) non-Jewish Christians, as in verses [11:17–24](../11/17.md). Alternate translation: [you non-Jewish believers in Christ … you non-Jews might not be wise in yourselves] (2) all the believers to whom Paul was writing this letter. Alternate translation: [you believers in Jesus … you believers might not be wise in yourselves]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

οὐ & θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο, ἵνα μὴ ἦτε παρ’ ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι, ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπὸ μέρους τῷ Ἰσραὴλ γέγονεν

If it would be more natural in your language, you could change the order of these phrases. Alternate translation: [in order that you, brothers, might not be wise in yourselves, I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, that a partial hardening has occurred in Israel]

Note 6 topic: translate-unknown

τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὒ Γάρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί τό μυστήριον τοῦτο ἵνα μή ἦτε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπό μέρους τῷ Ἰσραήλ γέγονεν ἄχρις οὗ τό πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ)

Paul uses the word mystery to refer to God saving a remnant of Jews after he saves a certain amount of Gentiles. This does not mean that the idea is hard to understand, but rather, God had not yet revealed it to people. If your language would not use mystery to refer to something that was concealed but has now been revealed, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [of this concealed message]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀδελφοί

brothers

Although the term brothers is masculine, Paul is using the word here in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Paul could be referring to: (1) non-Jewish Christians, as in verses [11:17–24](../11/17.md). Alternate translation: [my fellow non-Jewish believers in Christ] (2) all the believers to whom Paul was writing this letter. Alternate translation: [my fellow believers in Christ]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

μὴ ἦτε παρ’ ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι

Here, wise in yourselves refers to someone arrogantly thinking that he is wiser than he really is. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [you might not arrogantly think that you are wiser than you really are]

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

Here, hardening refers to being stubborn and unwilling to believe in Jesus. This hardening is only partial because some Jews believe in Jesus. See how you translated similar words in [11:7](../11/07.md) and [9:18](../09/18.md).

Here, fullness refers to the full amount of non-Jewish people whom God will save. See how you translated fullness in [11:12](../11/12.md).

εἰσέλθῃ

˓may˒_come_in

Here Paul uses come in to speak about people joining God’s people as if they were entering a place. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [has become his people]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:25 Paul usually uses the word mystery to refer to an event of the last days that has already been determined by God. Such a mystery already exists in heaven and is revealed to God’s people in the Christian era (see 16:25; 1 Cor 2:1, 7; 4:1; 15:51; Eph 1:9; 3:3, 4, 9; 6:19; Col 1:26, 27; 2:2; 4:3; 1 Tim 3:9, 16). Here, the mystery is the relationship of Jews and Gentiles in the plan of salvation, which is at the heart of this entire passage (Rom 11:11-32).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
