OET (OET-LV)But if by_grace, no_longer it_is of works, otherwise the grace no_longer is_becoming grace.

OET (OET-RV)So if it’s by grace, then it’s no longer by their actions, otherwise the grace wouldn’t be grace at all.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:1–10: God has not rejected the Jews

In this section Paul, using a rhetorical question, said that God had certainly not rejected his chosen people, the Jews. Then he spoke of several ways that showed that God has not rejected them. Paul spoke again of God’s grace being the basis for him choosing who will be his people. The basis is not what people do.

Then Paul explained why only some Jews have accepted Jesus as the Christ/Messiah. God caused some of them to reject Christ for his own purposes (which was so that many non-Jews would believe in Jesus (11:12)).

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God has kept a remnant of Jews as his people

At this time, in grace, God has chosen some Israelites/Jews

11:6a

And if it is by grace,

if it is by grace: Here the word if introduces a situation that is true. If this first part is true, that supports the second part (“it is no longer by works”) to also be true.

In some languages, using an if-clause would have a different meaning. If that is true in your language, translate the correct meaning. For example:

should it be by grace, and it is,

the basis of God choosing is grace, so

See how you translated this kind of if in 3:5 or 9:22.

it is by grace: The Greek is literally “by-grace.” The BSB and many English versions add the words it is for a natural English translation.

11:6b

then it is no longer by works.

it is no longer by works: The words no longer indicate that someone might have considered that God’s choosing was based on what that person did, but God has made it clear that it is not. These words do not imply that at one time God did choose people based on what they did.For example, see Moo (page 678), where he says that it is a logical distinction and not a distinction in time, that is, before and after some point in time. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

it is therefore not on the basis of works

by works: Here this phrase indicates that a person’s deeds are what is looked at when deciding something. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

based on works/deeds

works: Here this word refers generally to deeds. It does not refer to things done in a job or for business.

11:6c

Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.

Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace: There is a textual issue in 11:6c: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the words grace no-more becomes grace (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, REB, NLT, GW, NET, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the words grace no-more becomes grace, but if of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). The word Otherwise introduces what might be true if God did choose people based on what they did. In this case, grace would accomplish nothing. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved. (NLT)

God’s gift of grace would not really be a gift (NCV)

if the good they had done were the cause, it would not be possible for us to say it was graceKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

If they had been chosen through what they themselves have done, his grace would be meaninglessYongkom Back Translation, unpublished manuscript, Papua New Guinea.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-condition-fact

εἰ

if

Paul is speaking as if this were a hypothetical possibility, but he means that it is actually true. If your language does not state something as a condition if it is certain or true, and if your readers might misunderstand and think that what Paul is saying is not certain, then you can translate his words as an affirmative statement. Alternate translation: [since]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

χάριτι

˱by˲_grace

Paul is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the previous verse. Alternate translation: [election is by grace]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

χάριτι & ἔργων & χάρις & χάρις

˱by˲_grace & works & grace & grace

See how you translated grace in [4:16](../04/16.md) and works in [9:12](../09/12.md).

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

οὐκέτι

no_longer_‹it_is›

Here, it refers to “the election of grace” mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [the election of grace is no longer]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὐκέτι

no_longer_‹it_is›

Here, no longer indicates the logical conclusion of the preceding clause. It does not imply that election used to be by works. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [it is logically not]
