OET (OET-LV)master, the prophets of_you they_killed_off, the altars of_you they_tore_down, and_I was_left alone, and they_are_seeking the life of_me.

OET (OET-RV)Yahweh, they killed your prophets and tore down your altars, and I was left alone and now they want to kill me!’

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:1–10: God has not rejected the Jews

In this section Paul, using a rhetorical question, said that God had certainly not rejected his chosen people, the Jews. Then he spoke of several ways that showed that God has not rejected them. Paul spoke again of God’s grace being the basis for him choosing who will be his people. The basis is not what people do.

Then Paul explained why only some Jews have accepted Jesus as the Christ/Messiah. God caused some of them to reject Christ for his own purposes (which was so that many non-Jews would believe in Jesus (11:12)).

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God has kept a remnant of Jews as his people

At this time, in grace, God has chosen some Israelites/Jews

11:3a

“Lord, they have killed Your prophets

The quote in this verse is from 1 Kings 19:10, 14. If you indicate the location of quotes from the Old Testament with cross-references, you may want to do so here.

Lord: The word Lord refers to someone who has authority over people. This is a quote from the Old Testament, so this word refers to God. Do not add “Jesus” or “Jesus Christ” (as implied information) here. See how you translated this word in 4:8 or 10:16.

Your prophets: Elijah was also among the Lord God’s prophets, so in some languages it will be more clear to indicate that. For example:

the other prophets of yours

A “prophet” is a person who speaks on behalf of God. God’s message may be in words or visions. He then tells the people God’s message. It may reveal something about a past, present, or future event, or it may reveal someone’s thoughts, motives, or attitudes. It is not like a sermon, prepared by the preacher’s study of the Bible, but God may inspire a preacher with a prophecy during a sermon. The person speaks the prophecy to the people or writes it down for their use. Here are other ways to translate the word prophets:

It is good to use a general term that does not focus only on foretelling the future. Although prophets did foretell the future, they also gave people other messages from God. They especially told them to stop doing what is wrong and to obey God. See how you translated this word in 1:2.

11:3b

and torn down Your altars.

and torn down Your altars: Although the Greek word that the BSB often translates as and is not in the Greek of 11:3b, many languages must have an and at the beginning of this clause to connect it properly to 11:3a, as the BSB does. Here is another way to translate this:

and they have demolished your altars

torn down: The Greek word that the BSB translates as torn down refers to forcefully taking something apart so it cannot be used again. Here are other ways to translate this word:

destroyed (CEV)

demolished (ESV)

altars: An “altar” is a platform on which people offer sacrifices to God. Below is an artist’s idea of what the small altar at the temple in Jerusalem looked like.

If possible you should translate altars in a general way. For example:

the place for putting things for God

the place for burning sacrifices to honor God

11:3c

I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well”?

I am the only one left: Elijah implied here that no one else in Israel followed God, or it could refer to Elijah being the last prophet of God.Morris (page 400) says that Elijah was thinking of people obeying God based on God’s answer in the next verse. But this author thinks that God could have changed to speaking of people in order to encourage Elijah if all the other prophets of God had been killed. It is more likely that Elijah was still thinking of prophets (11:3a) here rather than anticipating what God would say in response. For example:

I am the only prophet left (NCV)

I: This word is emphasized in the Greek.

they are seeking my life as well: This is a figure of speech. It indicates that these people were looking for a way to kill Elijah. Some languages must translate without the figure of speech for the correct meaning. For example:

they seek a way to kill me

they want to kill me (NJB)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks

τοὺς προφήτας σου ἀπέκτειναν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Κύριε τούς προφήτας σοῦ ἀπέκτειναν τά θυσιαστήρια σοῦ κατέσκαψαν κἀγώ ὑπελείφθην μόνος καί ζητοῦσιν τήν ψυχήν μού)

This sentence is a quotation from [1 Kings 19:10](../1ki/19/10.md), [14](../1ki/19/14.md). It may be helpful to your readers to indicate this by setting off all of this material with quotation marks or with whatever punctuation or convention your language uses to indicate a quotation.

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

ἀπέκτειναν & κατέσκαψαν & ζητοῦσιν

˱they˲_killed_off & ˱they˲_tore_down & ˱they˲_˓are˒_seeking

In this verse they refers to the people of Israel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [the people of Israel killed … they tore down … those people of Israel seek]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

κἀγὼ ὑπελείφθην μόνος & μου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Κύριε τούς προφήτας σοῦ ἀπέκτειναν τά θυσιαστήρια σοῦ κατέσκαψαν κἀγώ ὑπελείφθην μόνος καί ζητοῦσιν τήν ψυχήν μού)

In this verse I and my refer to Elijah. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [and only I, Elijah, was left behind … my life]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

κἀγὼ ὑπελείφθην μόνος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Κύριε τούς προφήτας σοῦ ἀπέκτειναν τά θυσιαστήρια σοῦ κατέσκαψαν κἀγώ ὑπελείφθην μόνος καί ζητοῦσιν τήν ψυχήν μού)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and I alone am remaining]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

κἀγὼ ὑπελείφθην μόνος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Κύριε τούς προφήτας σοῦ ἀπέκτειναν τά θυσιαστήρια σοῦ κατέσκαψαν κἀγώ ὑπελείφθην μόνος καί ζητοῦσιν τήν ψυχήν μού)

Here, left behind means that Elijah thought he remained alive and all the other prophets had been killed. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [and I alone remained alive]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ζητοῦσιν τὴν ψυχήν μου

˱they˲_˓are˒_seeking (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Κύριε τούς προφήτας σοῦ ἀπέκτειναν τά θυσιαστήρια σοῦ κατέσκαψαν κἀγώ ὑπελείφθην μόνος καί ζητοῦσιν τήν ψυχήν μού)

Here, seek my life is a common expression that refers to people trying to kill Elijah. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [they want to kill me]
