SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:25–32: God will be merciful to Jews and Gentiles

In this section, Paul warned the Gentile believers in Rome to not think of themselves as better than the Jews who have not believed in Jesus. God has caused many Jews to not believe until the time the full number of Gentiles will believe. Then all Israel will be saved.

Many Jews have rejected the gospel of Jesus, but God still loves them because he chose them long ago. God will not change his mind about his promises to them and his calling of them.

Both Jew and Gentile are alike in that both have been disobedient and God will be merciful to both.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God still has a plan for Israel (JBP)

All Israel Will Be Saved (NIV)

11:31a–b

so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you: There are two ways to interpret how to connect the phrase that the BSB translates as through the mercy shown to you to the rest of the verse.

  1. It connects to they also may now receive mercy. For example:

so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you (NIV) (BSB, ESV, RSV, NIV, NJB, NABRE, NASB, KJV, GW, NET)

  2. It connects to they too have now been disobedient. For example:

In the same way, because of the mercy that you have received, the Jews now disobey God, in order that they also may now receive God’s mercy (GNT) (GNT, REB, NCV)

Many English versions follow interpretation (1). However, many scholars (for example, Moo(page 734). and Dunn(page 688).) make a strong case for interpretation (2).The GNT’s “because of” makes little sense here to this author. Moo (page 711) and Schreiner (page 624) translate the Greek as, “for the sake of mercy for you.” You should follow whatever interpretation the major language version does. If you follow interpretation (2), see also note on through the mercy shown to you below.

11:31a

so they too have now disobeyed,

so: The Greek word here means “in the same way.”L&N. It does not mean “therefore” here. Here are other ways to translate this word:

In the same way (GNT)

Thus alsoUma Back Translation on TW.

they too have now disobeyed: Here Paul spoke in summary about the disobedience of the Jews.Wallace (page 554). Here are other ways to translate this clause:

they are disobedient now (NJB)

the Jews now disobey God (GNT)

now: Here this word refers generally to this new period of time where the gospel of Jesus is proclaimed.

11:31b

in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.

now: There is a textual issue here:

  1. Some Greek manuscripts have the word now in the middle of this phrase. For example:

they also may now receive mercy (ESV) (BSB, ESV, NIV, GNT, NRSV, NASB, NET)

  2. Some manuscripts do not have this word. (RSV, NJB, KJV, GW, NLT, CEV, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the UBS Greek NT 5 supports it, although they had difficulty in deciding.

through the mercy shown to you: The Greek is literally “for the (thing) to you mercy.” If you followed interpretation (1) up in 11:31a–b, the meaning of “to/with/for” probably indicates that God’s mercy to the Gentiles helped accomplish the mercy to the Jews. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

for mercy to you

for God showing mercy to you

If you followed interpretation (2) up in 11:31a–b, the meaning of “to/with/for” probably indicates that the Jews disobeying helped accomplish God’s mercy to the Gentiles. For example:

for the sake of mercy for youMoo (page 734).

because God showed mercy to you (NCV)

mercy: The Greek word that the BSB translates as mercy refers to being concerned for someone in a bad situation and helping him in some way, including even forgiving him for something bad he did. See how you translated this word in 9:15.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

these & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕτως καί οὗτοι νῦν ἠπείθησαν τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει ἵνα καί αὐτοί νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν)

Here, these and they refer to Jewish people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [these Jews … the Jews]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

ἠπείθησαν τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει, ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν

disbelieved ¬which ˱in˲_your mercy in_order_that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕτως καί οὗτοι νῦν ἠπείθησαν τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει ἵνα καί αὐτοί νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν)

The phrase in your mercy could be connected to: (1) the verb translated as were disobedient, as in the ULT. (2) the verb translated as be shown mercy. Alternate translation: [were disobedient so that, in your mercy, they might also now be shown mercy]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει

¬which ˱in˲_your mercy

Here, in could indicate that what follows: (1) is one reason for the Jews being disobedient. Alternate translation: [because of your mercy] (2) is one purpose for the Jews being disobedient. Alternate translation: [for the purpose of your mercy]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει

¬which ˱in˲_your mercy

Here, your mercy refers to the mercy that God has shown to non-Jewish people whom he saves. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [in the mercy that God has shown you]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει

¬which ˱in˲_your mercy

Here, your is plural and refers to non-Jewish believers in Jesus. See how you translated you in the previous verse.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει & καὶ αὐτοὶ νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν

¬which ˱in˲_your mercy & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕτως καί οὗτοι νῦν ἠπείθησαν τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει ἵνα καί αὐτοί νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of mercy, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [in God acting mercifully to you … God might also now act mercifully to them]

Note 7 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

ἵνα

in_order_that

The phrase so that indicates that what follows is a purpose. Here, so that indicates that what follows is one purpose for the disobedience of the Jews. Use a natural way in your language for introducing a purpose clause. Alternate translation: [for the purpose that]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

καὶ αὐτοὶ νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕτως καί οὗτοι νῦν ἠπείθησαν τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει ἵνα καί αὐτοί νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God might also now show them mercy]
